As a resident of Ramsgate I found this article particularly interesting

It’s about The Granville Express which used to run from London to Thanet and, apparently, was the first “named” train

A Railway “First” for Ramsgate

Everybody will have heard of the “Flying Scotsman”, the “Bristolian” and the “Golden Arrow” as they, and many more like them were named trains.

First officially named, yes - I.e. appearing in timetables as such.

As far as names go though, the Irish Mail went back to 1848 but official use of the title only began in 1927.

Weren't there quite a few trains which acquired nicknames during the 19th century. The GWR's broad gauge "Flying Dutchman" and "Zulu" were early examples
