Is the incentivd to solely increase revenue within there network and/or starions they manage?
I guess so

Furthermore, various TOCs seem to be keen for people to book 'direct' and not to book on sites such as ours; sites such as ours will reduce revenue for TOCs such as GWR, as we often find cheaper combinations of tickets for their premium journeys.

Some people appear to be prepared to pay for higher fares providing they get some sort of 'freebie'; LNER and GWR absolutely aim for that sort of market.

It's actually more closed than that - "Travel must be between two stations served by GWR on services operated by GWR" and "used by you between two stations served by GWR, on services operated by GWR.".

So even a booking that has a short connecting hop, like Swindon to Cardiff Bay, where the journey is nearly all with GWR, wouldn't count.
Although TOCs such as GWR are known to come out with anti-splitting nonsense, and are keen to avoid people splitting at places like Didcot etc, they do want to encourage people to split at the point where you change off their services and onto other operators, as this means they get to keep 100% of the revenue on those segments.

Of course, this makes very little sense, but then a lot of what some TOCs do - when it comes to fares and ticketing matters - comes under that category.

Before people rush to join this scheme, and split all their tickets at start/end of the GWR segments of their journey, do also bear in mind that GWR charges admin fees for changes/refunds based on a 'per ticket' basis, not based on the whole booking, so any changes/refunds could end up being very costly.

Late to the party - I have just signed up for GWR Rewards, but have a question about the 40% off Bronze perk. My usual journey is DID-PAD, which seems to be uniquely missing as an option for an Advance ticket, is that right - and do I have to do a separate journey of some kind to use the benefit?

Yeah you're on a bit of a loser there. It seems to be framed so the old LSE (London and Southeast) area passengers can't take advantage. Swindon is the first place you can buy advance tickets from. I'll let others suggest work arounds but I'm quite sure they won't be within the terms and conditions of advance tickets.

Is the 10% food and drink on board, a one time use perk, or available on every train you use (with catering provision) over the course of 365 days.

I think the latter - from the FAQs: "Food and Beverage discounts (Bronze, Silver and Gold) – Show your barcode to the GWR hosts on the at-seat trolley service. Valid for 365 days"

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but it seemed better than creating a new one. Do you get points with a Day Travelcard, as long as it’s over £30? Seems to qualify in the T&C as it’s an Anytime ticket and GWR can be the ‘primary operator’… unless I’ve missed something?

Given the cheeky stealth increases from Reading on a one day travelcard (with a network railcard) we seem to keep on getting every three months, it won't take long for us to benefit from this as well

I’ve enjoyed my rewards as a Gold member, but having got there I think I may be better served now by making another account and getting to Gold on that one too..

I registered for GWR Rewards today. The Rewards account was showing in my App screen, along with the associated membership number. All the perks were online. I purchased some tickets shortly after, which were worth 20 points in total.

I later see in the T&C's:

4.8. You must register for GWR Rewards at least 24 hours before booking your travel in order to earn Points.

So does this mean I won't be getting the points for my ticket purchases, even though it appeared that my Rewards Account was setup and ready to go?

Also, the total points you can earn per day. Does this reset at midnight?

To be honest, I would be happy just hitting Silver tier. Unlikely to use the Pullman Dining, or 1st class Lounge at Paddington regularly. So only the 1st Return tickets would be of any benefit at Gold tier.

An interesting contrast to Avanti
Indeed.

Gold members with GWR get a yearly lounge pass with unlimited access, whereas with Avanti your yearly pass is only valid for one visit!

Silver members with GWR get a standard return, whereas with Avanti you get a standard premium return that is useless if your route or train doesn't have standard premium.

Are reward points credited once a journey is completed?

One of my transactions is showing on the statement area of my account now, with +10 in gray.

However, the points bar at the top still shows as zero.

Is it an open return?

An extract from section 4.2 in the terms says:
If you purchase a ticket with no specified day for travel, such as an Open Return Ticket, it will take up to 29 days from the date of your outward journey for your Points to be credited.

Relates to purchase of a return journey - purchased as two rail sale advance tickets.

Journey is on 21st March.
Ah okay.

Section 4.2 also says this:
Points for Qualifying Spend on Valid Tickets are earned on the day you make your purchases, but the Points will be allocated to your balance after your journey is completed and your Valid Ticket has been used for travel.

My guess is that you'll get the points credited once you've used the other ticket, but don't quote me on that!

The only slightly annoying thing for me is that if I was booking a return journey where the total fare came to £60-69.99, I'd be better off booking the outbound and return on separate days to get 2x10 points, instead of 1x10 points. Why not have the 10 point range be £35-69.99 or the 20 point range £60+?
The way points are accrued e.g. 10 points for a daily spend of £30-69.99 and 20 for more than £70 is totally bonkers.

The statement you get more points for more journeys is also substantially untrue.

Just base it on total spend, subject to the even less clear rules about what exactly qualifies as an eligible journey.

How does the 40% off (One off discount) work?

Same price offered whether I am logged in or not.

As far as I could work out, you put the code in at the payment screen, for two GWR only advances. It didn’t work for me and I eventually gave up.

When I initially tried to use the code for an out and back set of advances, it did not work, so changed the Internet browser I was using from Opera to MS Edge and it worked. So if it does not work on first attempt, it may worth trying a different browser. Note that whilst you can use the discount code for a ticket which part uses GWR, you will not get the points unless both the origin and destination are on GWR. So in my case I got the discount for tickets to and from a station in Sussex to Penzance, but not the points after the purchase.

Did you ever get a reply? I'm having issues with the rewards. My first 5 bookings registered my 10 points each taking me into silver (50 points) from bronze and I got a 40% discount code. However it would not apply as it says my email address isn't valid (???) and I've been trying to get help from GWR for weeks now, but it's not working. Also my bookings have stopped logging points. We must have exchanged 20 emails and had a call but they cannot seem to fix this. So disappointing.
I am having the exact same issue - did you ever figure yours out?

Effective immediately they have changed some conditions, in particular you must have a ticket on GWR before using the first class lounge. I imagine someone’s being taking the mick!

Good point. Sorry, this clarifies that - it must be a ticket to a station with a lounge (I think therefore only Paddington and Cardiff?):

Update to lounge access (Clause 9.2)
Lounge access is available when you hold a valid same-day GWR ticket for travel from or to a station where a GWR First Class lounge is available.

Hahahaha; I guess they didn't like what I proposed in my earlier post

Is it clear what is meant by ‘GWR ticket’ - I would hope that means a ticket valid for use on a GWR service, but could they mean it must have been issued by GWR?

Perhaps they mean a ticket where the fare is set by GWR? Or a ticket that has a route description involving the word GWR ?

Either way, I detest these lazy descriptions, that are of zero use to real customers, of tickets. It takes little effort to be clear. It’s a a problem at every TOC.
