Was travelling with SWR last week and was asked to show a railcard. I had not realized it was expired for 6 months. The past 6 months have been very difficult for me work-wise due to working long hours while studying for exams and going through a breakup of a long term relationship. I completely forgot about the railcard and just as a habit would assume its not expired (i think i potentially had a three year one previously so got out of the habit of renewing?). I am a doctor and a criminal record can make my life extremely complicated. I had 15 journeys during this period of the expired railcard. At the station I was honest that I just had not realized and instantly renewed my Railcard. I would never ever try to dodge any costs, Im paid enough to afford the 30£ of the railcard and this was honestly just an oversight on my part that is now stressing me so much due to the potential repercussions. It just feels like the potential punishment doesnt reflect the “crime” of being forgetful or absent minded. The offider their produced a prosecution notice and said they will get back to me. Im willing to pay any fine as long as this does not lead to a criminal record. How do I ensure this is the outcome?
