Scarborough: Walking down to the signal box caused two members of staff to follow us down the platform. They were discussing wether we were allowed to walk there or not. As far as I could tell there was no logical reason why we shouldn't have done that though trains rarely stop at that part of the platform I believe.
Had similar at Rhyl when wondering down the platform to photograph the former number 2 signal box. Member of platform staff scurried after me, although this was with the laudable intent of making sure I was not a suicide risk. It appears Rhyl does to people. After proving that having a ticket for the next train out gave me a reason to live, platform staff was quite chatty about signal box.

For someone who lives in "deepest, darkest Northumberland", I'm surprised you might want to leave Rhyl to go home :p

Is it still the case at Inverness that barriers are only opened when a train is ready to board? About 15 years ago I was changing from a Far North to Aberdeen train and was shouted at because I walked directly to the platform indicated on the screens.

Yes, even when the Highland Chieftain is clearly visible in platform 1 everyone just has to stand by the barriers until it's announced.

When I was there the barriers just popped open right as it was announced, with no staff at the gateline (but someone had to have hit a button somewhere).

Around a decade ago I once found myself trapped on Peartree station as the intercom simply didn't do anything. There was a number on a piece of paper attached to it, which was seemingly for (as-was) East Midlands Trains control. I was treated with extreme suspicion on the other end of the phone as to how I'd obtained the number, but the gate was eventually unlocked.
I'd have been inclined to say at that point something along the lines of "I am a passenger on the platform who has been instructed to call this number as the intercom is defective. Open it or I will call the Fire Brigade to release me".

Blackpool North has ticket barriers so it can not be revenue related. I too have always been baffled by this one. We have dozens of other similar seaside town terminus stations and they allow anyone to freely walk on to the platforms. It makes it a very unpleasant station to visit. Blackpool South is nicer to use.
I work at Blackpool North, there's a number of reasons why pax aren't able to go onto the platforms till the train is ready and most of it is Network Rail won't spend the money on infrastructure.
Only two of the six platforms are covered and even then only a quarter of the platform is covered from the elements.
No help points,No yellow lines,No benches,No signage such as timetables etc,No destination boards on the platforms,No CCTV that can monitor all the platforms and there length, all of these are requirements stated by RSSB for a major terminus for passenger platform waiting use,Compare BPN to Liverpool lime street.
Also BPN is self dispatch by the conductor.

Also the trains are cleaned when they arrive and 195s and 331s can have there toilets tanked at BPN without the worry of passenger interference.
Hope this helps.

That just about puts the whole thing in a nutshell (whichever side of the fence you sit on). All of the other things you mention are surely a chicken-and-egg situation. Why spend money putting passenger friendly things there if passengers aren’t let on to the platform until the last minute?

Stockport. Platform 0 is outside the barriers.
So when you have passed the barrier to platforms 1-4 you are not free to wander all platforms.
Although it's outside the barriers, Platform 0 is also regularly closed off in the evening or if it's not in use.

It's usually closed at all times except for when requested to be used nowadays.

I've been past barriers before to get some photos at major termini but only after I have had to sign in at reception!

Hadley Wood's central platforms? Wikipedia states these are closed to public, but does anything stop there at all?
All of the ECML inner suburban stations have this arrangement nowadays, except where fast trains are regularly booked to stopped. I believe the one exception to this is at Potters Bar.

And yes, there are locked gates that prevent you from accessing them - I actually can't quite remember if they are present at Hadley Wood as it's been a while since my last time there, but I would imagine so.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the international stations yet. You'd be hard pressed to get to the international platforms at any of the four ostensibly "international" stations without a valid reason. At least with St Pancras the trains actually call there.

Fair point actually.

This also brings up something else I just remembered - the EU gauge platforms at Stratford Int'l (i.e 1 and 4) are completely blocked off, and I presume it's the same for the fast CTRL platforms at Ebbsfleet nowadays.

Platform 4 on most suburban MML stations is inaccessible and locked and gated to stop you from accessing the fast lines, no idea if this is the case on anything north of St Albans but definitely is the case South of it.

Not sure if this counts but South Hampstead station has platforms on the WCML fasts and slows but the platforms are not accesable and are in a very poor state on everything other than the DC lines.

Blackpool North, platforms barriered off until boarding commences.
Since when? I haven't been there since late 2022.

That just sounds like the policy of the 20 Network Rail-managed stations.

If you have to go past the barriers to take photos/videos/spot, or you're having a proper "session", you have to sign in / get a badge or whatever, but if you're already on the platform and are just taking a few photos (or say a 1-minute video) in a short period of time, you can get away with doing that.

This has been happening for many years/decades.

Blackpool North is synonymous with poor customer service, rude treatment of customers (which I have personally experienced) and not allowing passengers onto the platforms until shortly before departure.

Yes, the gates at the top of the stairs on the footbridge are locked.

I was apprehended by a security guard at Wrexham General when I walked down to the bay platforms on the south side of the railway station where Wrexham & Shropshire used to stable their stock. I thought it was very odd to be asked to turn around until I saw the do not pass signs, pretty much just after the road bridge above. I still can't understand why though

One that doesn't let you is Skegness. It's a similar thing to Blackpool North, although on a smaller scale with there being only 1tph (but 4 platforms!). There can be long queuing systems in the summer months.
Some years ago I got a train to Cleethorpes and we had to wait for someone to unlock a gate before we could leave the platform. So there's definitely something about seaside stations.

Be interesting to see how Blackpool North station handles the Railway 200 inspiration train which is due to be at the station from the 4th-7th November and what arrangements they make for barrier/platform access.

Yeah, I generally only show up for specific services so I typically get away with just asking the gateline staff.

Blackpool North always puzzled me. It's no Euston, hardly heaving crowds outside the summer and even then it's mostly quiet. Is it a revenue thing?

When they are events on it can get very very busy. I have seen chaos in that station before, it is too small for purpose. They should have kept the original Central Station.

Maybe it'll just sit there empty while everyone's stuck on the concourse?

The former bays are no longer part of the actual station? When was the last time that they were used for passenger arrivals or departures?

If I remember correctly Wrexham and Shropshire was the only TOC that used them so when they went bust they fell out of use.

Ah that's disappointing. I must've got lucky, as I took photos of "my" 195 and 331 (doing the kneeling down thing for the 195 and waiting for my fellow passengers to be out of the way of the 331) and I had no issues. I've only been there on a single day in late 2022 though.

And they only used them for servicing the stock.

In passenger service, all their trains used Platform 3.
