Wouldn't it be a similar situation that 68008 & 009 do now?

No. Currently DRS are the loco supplier for Chiltern - the whole pool (68008-15) are DRS locos and they supply however many it is a day to Chiltern.

The replacement locos will be leased directly from Beacon Rail and DRS will have no involvement.

What will Chiltern use as rescue locos which have been particularly busy out of Wembley LMD in past few months?

Also worth considering the relative age of the 165s and whether a few "christmas trees" might help the Rosco with fleet availabilty.
There has been at least one 165 laid up as spares donor for the last few years. 165025 spent a couple of years heavily robbed of parts, and was joined for several months by 165026. Both are now back in service but their place has been taken by 165003 which is the current Aylesbury xmas tree.

Leads to another question.
I suppose DRS to the loco swaps between Gresty and Wembley for 68008-68015. Presume that once they go back to DRS another contratc will be arranged for the Beacon class 68s to move to and from Leicester and Eastleigh and the Chiltern stabling points.

The Chiltern mk5 stock is to be based at Alstom Central Rivers at Burton, so not to hard to swap locos around depending where Beacon base the 68s.

When the 68s were on the TPE sets and they were based at Longsight, did the 68s return to Crewe/Carlisle for maintenance? Or was it carried out at Longsight?

That's not correct - nothing is going to Central Rivers. As described above maintenance will be done at Eastleigh.

My bad, I'd only seen a tweet saying Central Rivers when announcement was made, hadn't seen it had since been amended. (Updated tweet below).

Mk 5A update: @chilternrailway will look for a new maintenance provider from 12/26 but under initial deal, CAF, UKRail and Arriva TrainCare will carry out maintenance on 68s and stock at Arriva TrainCare, Eastleigh. Central Rivers report was accurate at the time - plan changed

Wasn't these coaches supposed to be suffering from cracking issues or was that not the case?

Some had cracking issues yes. Unsure if rectification work had been carried out.

Bare in mind the hitachi fleets are still running around with the crack issue.

Probably a stupid question, but here goes!

If increased capacity was required for special events, could they be operated with 2 Mk5 sets with a loco in the middle? Probably platform lengths is an issue, but is it technically possible?
IF it was possible; what platforms would you like those hypothetical 11car sets to fit onto?

I do not think the GWR though of it as a outer-suburban service.
That's what London – Aylesbury and other services are now, regardless of what the line's builders may have thought at the time.

Maybe not, but you can say the same about Great Central, also long gone. I’m genuinely not sure what your point is. Through trains to Birmingham only started again in 1993 after a 25-year gap.

It’s an outer-suburban service and, when HS2 opens, it won’t even be the second most important line.

My point is that if you turned up at Snow Hill or Moor Street and asked for a ticket to London they would sell you one, they would not say you need to go to New Street for London. I think that Chiltern would say it an Inter- City service, with newish loco hauled trains

It may not be the most important line for the purposes of Birmingham - London, but for the many intermediate stops such as Solihull, Leamington Spa, Banbury, Bicester North towards the northern part of the line, it will remain vital in both directions. It would be good to see some further direct services towards Stourbridge. While HS2 adds extra capacity, people value convenience and ultimately if you live by the Chiltern line and the price remains reasonable, you aren’t going to be hugely incentivised to travel into Birmingham or to Interchange.

Sorry but I’ve no idea what that has to do with whether it is an intercity service or not.

Exactly.

Again I’m not sure it being vital for places along the line makes it any more of an intercity service. It can be relatively important and not be intercity

So by the same logic, the Northern services on the Harrogate loop are Intercity services? They also go between two cities, and are important for those living on the route.

Is InterCity the brand in use anywhere on the UK rail network? The closest I can think of is the ScotRail Inter7City HST service group. Logically any service that provides a link between two settlements with city status could be described as inter-city (not capitalised), but otherwise it seems to just a vaguely applied and subjective description that implies some sort of long distance or ‘express’ train…

GWR's IET (their name for their 800s and 802s) is Intercity Express Train, likewise the IEP (GWR and LNER 80X) was Intercity Express Programme.
But yes ScotRail's is probably the closest.

EMR brand their long distance services out of London under EMR Intercity, which is another close reference

Or indeed Cardiff - Portsmouth (as many cities as the whole Scotrail Inter7cities network)

Half of them were removed during the door conversion overhauls; they do still have them at one end of each carriage.
More than half - I once discovered that the carriage I was sitting in had no toilets, and neither of the adjacent ones had a toilet at the adjoining end. Fortunately it was a short journey so I just held on until I reached my destination!

Yikes!!!!!

I'll check the situation next time I do a Birmingham trip assuming I can time it to use a Mk3 rake.

If you’re in the TGS of the Castle sets the situation’s very similar. Indeed, when you get to the far end of the next coache you’re also faced with “staff only” as you’re facing away from the first passenger loo you encounter.

In the days of the (original) GWR, it was part of their main line from Paddington to Birkenhead, which is rather different from Chiltern's current offering.
