Rome-Pompeii FIP

Good day all,

Hoping to get some advice.

Next month me and my partner are travelling to Italy and planning a day to pomeii from Rome. We are both rail staff so both have FIP cards.

I’ve already ordered our coupons for Italy however I’m now stuck on what I’d have to do next.

Planning on getting the 10:20 from Rome-Naples which I understand I’ll need to reserve a seat on and also pay the supplement fare difference. Could anyone enlighten me on how to do this?

If you're heading to the Roman remains, you may want to try the FS service from Napoli Garibaldi in one direction (Pompei station, near one end of the Roman site) and the Circumvesuviana (Pompei Scavi station, near the other end), in the other direction, just for a contrast!
Can't help on the long distance stretch though.

AFAIK this is only possible at a Trenitalia ticket office. You'll pay the difference between the regional train fare (€13.65) and the full Frecciarossa fare (€48 in 2nd) and you'll get a reservation included with that. Regular advance tickets can be cheaper.

Fortunately all the major/medium stations in Italy still have ticket offices so you can book right up to departure without any problems - assuming there is space of course. Note that on Frecciarossa there are three classes 'Business', 'Premium' and 'Standard' - FIP is not valid in Business; 1st class coupons valid in Premium, Standard coupons in Standard.

Correct, although I've always found this strange. "Premium" isn't 1st class, it's 2nd with leather seats and a free drink. Interrail 1st class is however valid in "Business", which is 1st class. Maybe Trenitalia like FIP coupons even less than Interrail?

We went to Herculaneum instead when staying at Sorrento, it was very good and recommended for not being as crowded as Pompeii. Istr that lots of the best stuff in the museum at Naples came from there.

When I'm in Italy I never use FIP for Frecciarossa, I book in advance, and often find Italo first to be cheaper than an advance in second on TrenItalia
