Hi All,

Can anyone tell me whether a Basingstoke - Theale offpeak day return is valid via Reading (as in, not Reading West)? If so, is a BOJ permissible on both portions?

Thanks,

Mark

I don't think that works; you are only allowed to double-back within a routeing group for interchange purposes.

I have been to Reading on a Hook-Theale Off peak return, as there are trains from both Basingstoke towards Reading, AND Reading towards Theale which don't stop at Reading West. However, technically I don't know if it is allowed, but the NRE journey suggests journeys past Reading West.

It's definitely allowed (and for many B&H destinations, no trains stop at Reading West.

The CDR has restriction B3 which allows BoJ on both legs.

What is meant by "interchange" in this context?

the way I interpret it (so this is probably not accurate), is that hes doubling back between Reading (Ctl) and Reading West to change trains, and breaking journey while there, therefore, since both separate are permitted, both together are permitted

I thought it was permitted too. I thought "for interchange purposes" only precluded, for example, buying a ticket from Basingstoke to Reading West and travelling to Reading General before doubling back to Reading West. In this case that would be totally meaningless anyway since the fare would be issued to Reading Stations, but would make more sense somewhere else where a routeing guide group didn't coincide with a fares group. For example, Stansted Airport. It is in a routeing guide group with Stansted Mountfitchet but they are not a fares group. It is not permitted to buy a ticket from London Terminals to Stansted Mountfitchet and travel to Stansted Airport and break your journey there, saying you are going to travel back to Stansted Mountfitchet later - because the destination on the ticket is within the routeing group. But if both origin and destination are outside the routeing group, then doubling back is allowed, I thought (e.g. London Terminals to Elsenham) - and none of this has any effect on break of journey restrictions since they apply to the ticket and the routeing guide has no effect on them.

But I did read or hear somewhere I think that ATOC had recently or were going to "clarify" this and change the rules so that break of journey would not be permitted whilst doubling back for interchange purposes. I can't see how that could be codified into ticket restrictions though.

Oooh, I hope not! That'll be one more loophole closed on a regular journey into London I make!

I can't see how it would be easily done anyway. I'm sure it's something they would *like* to do, but with the complex interactions between ticket restrictions and the routeing guide I'm not sure it's really possible.

I can say with 100% certainty that Basingstoke - Theale is valid for interchange or BoJ via Reading/Reading West.

I hope not too, although it would be a typical ATOC "clarification" - yet another layer of complexity on a system which virtually no-one understands, which is practically unenforceable and gives rise to as many loopholes as it aims to "fix".

I can't believe there are many circumstances where this can be abused anyway. In OP's case, a BSK-THE ticket is more expensive (by 50p) than a BSK-RDG ticket anyway (though I realise not all routeing groups coincide with ticketing group stations). What would he be supposed to do if he wanted to break his journey? He couldn't be excessed to a ticket which permits BoJ, as stated in the NRCoC, since BoJ is permitted by the ticket, but not this proposed rule. Asking for a ticket from RDW would lead to raised eyebrows. So split tickets at RDG then, at nearly twice the price? Seems a bit much to me.

Oooh, I hope not! That'll be one more loophole closed on a regular journey into London I make!

I think there's a much more obvious way for them to close that one ;)

In any case, not all Basingstoke - Reading and Reading - Theale services stop at Reading West, so in many cases the fastest journey requires you to go via Reading (main). Journey planners often support this which makes the journey valid.
