What an absolutely fantastic and memorable day, although not without its flaws.
It's disappointing that a number of exhibits didn't have information boards with those that did often had very basic information. There is the guidebook, but some more detail of the rolling stock in question and maybe a prompt for a discussion between kids and parents could have helped to satisfy idle curiosity and get younger kids engaged. I noticed the HydroFLEX information board was in a completely different building to the actual train! Very impressed with the 507 Preservation Society though who had the saloon lights of their 507 on and ticking over with plenty of information panels explaining components, the history of Merseyrail, and interactive elements in the form of a destination display you could use, tours under the 507 in the inspection pit, and entering on carriage of the train. Not to mention incredibly friendly volunteers who were willing to answer any and all questions. That's the sort of thing I expected to see a lot more, if I'm honest - exhibits placed within some sort of context.
Another complaint I heard was regarding the map. It can be difficult to orientate yourself
and the map notably excludes some areas like the Quiet Room in the Entertainment Zone (if I remember correctly), which would benefit neurodiverse visitors. Better way finding through university freshers-style large four-sided pillars could have helped a lot. The signs on buildings can also be quite small and I'm surprised they didn't go with big banners instead.
Impressed with the number and locations of the portaloos and food options. You're not going to be caught short or starve. Regarding seating, I did notice people in Alstom hi-vis putting out a lot more chairs in the buildings after lunchtime. Hopefully that'll stay for the next couple of days. One of the Greater Anglia 755s makes a nice place to have a sit-down.
I have to admit, I was a nosey parker reading all the work orders and notes around the place. Seeing how the works are equipped was fascinating all on its own. I didn't see any trade secrets, so you can't sue me Alstom.
Would make me stand infront of him for a prolonged period that... Out of order but expected from a minority.
I love how you think. If only I wasn't so meek, alas!
Yes i was thinking that, well i guess they were working hard across the network!
Saw a rake of yellow NR coaches go past when I was waiting for the Sheffield train at about quarter past four, so you're right there!
