Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice and suggestions about a serious mistake I made.
I was travelling with my wife from Portslade to London Blackfriars for the past 8 months due to work. During this time, we were in a very difficult financial situation — both of us had lost our jobs earlier, and we were paying for my mother’s cancer treatment. We had no choice but to keep living in Portslade due to a tenancy contract, while working in London.
To save money, we were only buying partial season tickets and sometimes using discounted railcards for the remaining part of the journey. We now understand this was wrong, and we regret it deeply.
Two days ago, while getting off the train at Blackfriars, two officers stopped us before exiting and asked about our tickets. They showed us all the ticket history they had on record and asked several questions. It was clear they had everything.
This has caused me a lot of stress and shame. I feel horrible for putting myself and my wife in this situation. We’ve now moved to Purley to stop this kind of travel pattern and do things the right way, but it was too late.
I need advice:
We are both hard-working and have learned a hard lesson. Any guidance on what steps I should take now would be very helpful.
Thank you so much.

Does this mean they are definitely going to prosecute, or is there still a chance to settle this?
I’m ready to pay the full fine and do whatever is needed to sort this out. I’ve never been in this kind of situation before and it’s really affecting me mentally.
Any advice on what usually happens next or what I should prepare for would really help. Thank you.

I need advice:
- The officers clearly had our full travel history — does that mean we are in serious trouble?
- We were caught just two days ago — what should I do next?
- I’m ready to pay all fines and cooperate fully. I just want to resolve this and avoid a criminal record.
We are both hard-working and have learned a hard lesson. Any guidance on what steps I should take now would be very helpful.

Just to add — I gave the officers all my correct personal information, answered honestly, and they gave me a receipt after taking down the details.Hi everyone,
