I seem to remember a night bus terminated there for a while? N33 I want to say as I'm sure the N37 continued into Midlothian.
I think you might be right. I think this was up to around 2011 when it was withdrawn. Curious as to what the previous daytime route may have been?

I was under the impression Lothian had access to the most amount of double deckers possible aside from 2019-2020 during this period because of all the new deliveries coming in or was it a similar situation to when they replaced 153 deckers with only 98 in 2021, with the E400 MMC's replacing B9TL's 301-350/826-840/841-904/907-925 and E400H's 201-215.
They still had 30ish B7TLs aswell that they replaced

How did the 31 interwork with the 33 back then? Infact how did the 7/11 interwork also? As far as I'm concerned the 7 always went to the Royal with the 11 going to Hyvots, did they both just terminate at Newhaven back then and that's how it interchanged?
Before the early 2000s, maybe even before then, the 31 used to turn left from Lasswade road up to Ferniehill Avenue where it would terminate and become a 33 to Baberton and vice versa, at Hyvots Bank instead of Ferniehill avenue. The 7 used to go up Lasswade road also and turn right onto Captains road interworking with the 11 there. This was changed when the 7 was rerouted up Liberton Road and the 7 interworked with the 33 at Hyvots/Ferniehill and 11/31 on Captains road before the 31 was eventually extended to Midlothian and 11 to Hyvots Bank in the early 2000s, the 7 and 33 interworking continued until 2012 when the 7 was extended to the Royal Infirmary and the 33 to Gorebridge to replace the then withdrawn First 86

It became quite problematic though as you had peak runs on the 19 which were single decker operated - an absolute no no. The 18 and 32 just about managed but it wasn’t great.

I believe what started it off was a poorly thought out set of 2015 changes. 426-437 and 551-570 had not long been delivered. As a result many of the oldest double deckers were sold on. Central gained most of Longstone’s 52 plate Tridents to replace a large chunk of the 51 plates at Central. There were also some 51 plates at Longstone that had been replaced. 426-437 had limited impact on the city fleet as 937-950 moved to Marine for the then LCB 104 and 113. 937-938 had been earlier replaced on the Airlink and were by this point much needed peak extra buses for Longstone. 939-950 were replaced by 426-437. As a result, 171-175 and 635-636 were moved back into the city fleet with 195-199 stored.

Then in 2016 ECB came along. That took away a further few vehicles from the city fleet without replacement. 6 51 plate tridents went over for the school runs. The other 51 plates had been sold on by this point. The 6 moved to ECB were the last examples left. 193-194 also moved East from the city fleet with 195-199 brought out of storage. Second hand 101-107 came in too.

I want to say 441-465 for Longstone ended up being delivered late, something like December 2016 when it should’ve been September 2016. 989 was also slower than first thought to repair. Remember that’s when the heritage vehicles even made an appearance on peak extra 25’s - this is largely what 937-938 had been doing. Eventually by about the start of 2017 it had stopped as 701-720 moved to Central in phases with other buses moving to Marine in a domino effect. Thus the problem had finally ironed itself out. The subsequent introduction of the 43 in 2017 thankfully made no difference as the largest batch of Gemini3’s 466-510 had already been delivered.

If you search across sites such as Flickr you’ll see examples of what I’m referring to. This issue was at its peak in early to mid 2016.

The reduction in 2020-21 was simply as a result of COVID. Though with hindsight, they sold too many buses on. Only now are they starting to fill the gaps back. They were in desperate need for the cash at the time though.
The 2016 decker shortage was incredible looking back at it, we think the fleet is stretched now… it was amazing how Lothian managed the service levels back then. It took over 2 years to iron itself out aswell im pretty sure it wasnt until the February 2018 changes that it was managable. The gap of 3 years of no new deckers between 201-215 in summer 2011 and 401-425 in December 2014 was one of the main problems that caused this. The short sightedness of selling all of 301-350 in 2021 has humped Lothian now

All of the remaining first batch BZLs, minus 750, are showing as taxed for August. Only 732, 735 and 746 have to appear at Seafield. Second batch vehicles SF25 YNC, YND and YNG are also taxed and at Volvo Cardonald. SF25 YNL has also been seen at Volvo.
735 and 741 were seen at Seafield in February, however I don't know what's happened with them since then.

The 7 and 11 both terminated at Newhaven until First started operating the 11 in late 2001 as part of the Edinburgh bus war. First's rival service started and finished at Ocean Terminal, so Lothian soon followed suit. When First withdrew their service Lothian continued to operate to Ocean Terminal until the 10 and 11 swapped termini and the 11 was redirected to Western Harbour.

I think the only way to resolve this would be to keep all of the existing buses and have the next 48 delivered. The thing with that is that they would need to get more drivers and also increase the frequency of routes or expand. It could be interesting times ahead. I wonder if 841-850 will come back and reach 20 years of service with Lothian.

There are also the rumoured new Airlink as well so they will have 1128-1140 to join the main fleet.

I remember the bus war and child fares were something like 20p on First. I do miss having a variety of operators in Edinburgh. Now it is mostly Lothian with very few other operators (Borders Buses, Midland Bluebird, Bright Bus, Big Bus, Stagecoach, Ember, Flixbus, Citylink, National Express..).

If they make it a week into September then they'll all be 18 years old. There is a decent chance at least a few of the batch will last until then, however 20 is less likely. While they have been extensively refurbished, I think it would take a lot of things going wrong for Lothian to keep them in service another 2 years. As discussed on here before, buses reaching 20 years in service with Lothian is extremely rare. They might potentially still have open top tridents 219 and 220 (now both 25 years old), however they're very different as they were both new as open toppers and have seen very little service, or action of any kind, since 2016.

Speaking of these weird scenarios, does anyone know the last time Burdiehouse turning circle was used on a regular basis for its actual purpose? I know the heritage specials did but as a regular everyday route it must be going back a very long time now? I know the crossing being installed meant the stop came back into use but I honestly can’t remember the last time something was scheduled to turn around there.
Probably the 18 in 1986 before the services were extended to Midlothian after deregulation.

Re the southern termini, the traditional network (pre deregulation) was for all LRT routes to terminate at the boundary - Eastfield had the 26/44 etc, Sighthill had the 22/25/34/35 etc

No city bypass, no running into Midlothian, no Infirmary, so Captains Road was a natural terminus

The 7/11 made some sense. Newhaven - Captains Road - Newhaven (via Lothian Road/ Morningside in one direction, via Bridges/ Liberton in the other)

So a bit like the 34/35, where there was one terminus, slightly different routes into the city centre then a big loop on the other side, albeit the 34/35 were advertised as a circle whereas the 7 and 11 appeared on maps/ timetables as separate services

The 31/33 was a little stranger, creating one long diagram from East Craigs - Haymarket - Bridges - Kaimes - Captains Road - Little France - Bridges - Wester Hailes (can't be certain when the Barton extension happened), which must have been challenging for reliability. The 31/33 officially terminated at Ferniehill

This was in the era of many circles in Edinburgh, which created problems when Eastern Scottish started competing on one section (harder to react to e.g. the C3 taking passengers off the 7 when any frequency increase would mean having to throw buses into the 11 too, changes to times messing up coordination with other Morningside routes)

As discussed, the 7 and 31 were swapped, allowing a route from Princes Street to Bonyrigg etc

There's a big market (and lots more housing) across the border nowadays (and obviously no Eastern Scottish/ SMT in Midlothian), the Hospital has created some new demands too, so the current set ups seem to work, but the old 7/11 and 31/33 made sense at the time

The 33 started running to Baberton in July 1987, replacing service 69 which had started that January. Both services took advantage of the recently-built link road from Westburn Avenue to serve the estate. The link road was built to replace Baberton Mains Terrace, the original northern access into Baberton, which was severed when the Sighthill section of the city bypass was built in 1985-86.

Back in the seventies when the 11 terminated at Fairmilehead and the 15 at Princess Margaret Rose Hospital. It used to reverse in if recall the 7 and 37 interworked the Kaimes to Newhaven route. The 18 Burdiehouse to Barnton interworked with the 41. The 31 interworked with the 33 as said but didnt use Kirk Brae instead going along the road at the top of the brae to get to Lasswade Road before heading up through Gilmerton to Ferniehill. The 20 ran from Hyvots to Barnton. If I recall following the 31 route to the bottom of Liberton Brae before heading along by Kings Buildings. I could mention all the Eastern Scottish routes but that would be off topic. I never did manage to see the mythical 76 though.

Re Burdiehouse, it would be an unusual place to even use as a part-route curtailment; if possible, taking passengers to Straiton would be preferable (more useful/more facilities) or if getting back to the depot quickly is a priority, terminate one stop back at Kaimes Crossroads. I presume that it's still there just because it isn't worth the hassle and cost of removing it! (see also Sighthill Terminus, Greendykes, Fairmilehead, Oxgangs, and probably others I've forgotten about).

Regarding the 11/31 loop, at one time (?late 1990s onwards) half the 31s ran to Polton and and the other half linked with the 11. The 11s also divided with half terminating at Fairmilehead by the bypass and the other half linked to the 31. The Polton service only ran weekday daytimes.

Around 2005 Lothian got route development money for a service to South Bonnyrigg and after that all the 31s went out to Midlothian and the loop was broken. All (Some, not all, see below) the 11s then ran to Hyvots Bank as now.

The 11s were still 50:50 to Hyvots and Fairmilehead in 2007; I think it was 2011 that they were all sent through to Hyvots (with a vocal complaint from people in Fairmilehead that they'd have to make do with 5 buses per hour instead of 8, or else walk all the way to the crossroads).

That was the service change in May 2001 when the 31 started running to Polton. It replaced service 80 which had run to there previously.

Volvo B7RLE / Wright Eclipse, ex Arriva Fastlink.

They were given dateless Northern Irish plates and the seats were retrimmed in Lothian fabric. They gained the white destination displays later (originally orange)

The 11/31 used to change over at Captain's Road and then they swapped the changeover point to Frogston Road. I think it was around 2002. The Polton Mill 31 services ran Mon-Sat. I remember the Hyvots Bank services starting in 2005.

Superb, thank you, I had been thinking the fleet numbers were actually 101-107, and wracking my brain to try and remember them, but I see that wasn’t the case. Cheers

You hit the post, so to speak, and I too had forgotten the 10xxx and 20xxx fleet number phase so it was an interesting rabbit hole to disappear off down :D

After so long of having fleet numbers almost exclusively between 1 and 999 (usually singles 1-200 and doubles 201-999, with numerous exceptions), it was quite an interesting time indeed having 4 and 5 digit fleet numbers on so many buses, with new buses almost exclusively given entirely new numbers (the initial ex-Londons onwards) rather than taking numbers freed up by withdrawn buses. It would seem that these days we're mostly back to the old system, however 1000-1153 and the coaches (9001-9013, 9101-9102 and 9201-9208) remain with 4 digit numbers. With the size of the current fleet (including Eve coaches and trams as well) being large enough that sticking purely to 1-999 could be difficult, so I assume we'll continue to have 4 digit numbers in the furure, at least for coaches if buses are now back to 3 digits for new batches.

I believe that the 5 digit fleet numbers in the early years of ECB were due to systems in the depot being configured for 5 digit fleet numbers of the previous operator, so they just added the prefixes of 10xxx to singles and 20xxx to doubles.

I would take a guess that new batches will be assigned up to realistically 998 and then restart at 301, or maybe 351 or 401 if they want to leave space for future trams.

On the subject of fleet numbers, I am curious to see if the Lothian Motorcoaches fleet and Eve Coaches fleet merge to the point of having just one livery and fleet number system, if they'll go for the Eve style Exx numbers or the LMC 9xxx numbers, or something else entirely.

As to the ex-Arriva Eclipses, 101 and 102 were always with ECB so iirc only carried the 10101(01010101...) and 10102 numbers, while 103-107 went to Lothian Country and officially numbered just 103-107 without the 10 prefix. Then there were ex-Whitelaws 193 and 194, 10193 and 10194 at ECB, which where then renumbered TB107 and TB108, meaning that within the 2010s, Lothian technically had 3 seperate Wright Eclipse Urbans numbered 107. Them being 107 - SN04 NGX, TB107 - SF55 HHC (RIG 6498) and 10107 - GN06 EWD (RIG 6497).

Also I believe that 942 only carried the 20942 number for a year or so, because when it returned with 779's roof it was back to just 942.

It is an interesting phase, and could potentially be confusing to someone in 3 or 4 decades time who wasn't alive in the 2010s, researching the history of the fleet and suddenly encountering stuff like 20001 and 10101 among a fleet numbering system otherwise well established and fairly simple.

I am pretty sure the old *BINGHAM ROAD, later just BINGHAM terminus for the 4 still exists. Before the recent QMU extension I think it was still used by the 4 as part of the route from The Jewel to Hillend. *Bingham Road itself was I understand renamed by the council to Duddingston Row, many years ago now. I have a 70s bus map owned from new which I must dig out.

The pre-1986 SAUGHTON MAINS terminus for the 3 was partially filled in maybe 20 years later. The old waiting area has gone but the road in still exists as it give access to the Saughton Mains scheme and the modern health centre.

The former LITTLE FRANCE terminus for the 49 still exists just uphill from the Royal Infirmary. I don't suppose it has been used for short turnings since the Royal Infirmary opened.

GILMERTON (3, 8, 78 Limited Stop?) all used this up to 1986.

MORNINGSIDE (Balcarres Street) 23 terminus still exists I think but with retirement flats alongside, if I am thinking of the right spot. I haven't been along there for a while.

For a brief while the 33 terminated at Little France. I think before the extension to Sheriffhall. It may have been a temporary measure but I seem to recall it.

Honestly the amount of knowledge on here in unbelievable. Hopefully that person in 3 or 4 decades time will still have archive access to these posts !

That's the good thing about these sites and also Flickr is that history can be preserved. Even looking back at your own photos you realise how much has changed :)

Yeah the amount of stuff on flickr and these sites you can look at. The amount of rare stuff and behind the scenes stuff is all interesting. I remember seeing an album not on flickr (maybe imgur?) of inside seafield works with things like 989 without its roof, 390 after its fire etc..

For a brief while the 33 terminated at Little France. I think before the extension to Sheriffhall. It may have been a temporary measure but I seem to recall it.
The 44 and 45 at Juniper Green used to use Juniper Ave, Belmont Rd and Baberton Ave to turn before they were extended.

The 45 was extended to Riccarton in May 1984. At the same time, the LRT/Eastern Scottish joint service 61 was extended from Currie to Balerno. This was a couple of years ahead of deregulation, when the 44 was extended.

Change service 33 back to it old route and too many buses going to clovestone 3 18 20 21 30 33 and give restored service for people who live in kingknowe with service all day
I do think something needs to be done about the Clovenstone situation. Whether or not you even need the 33 is another question. Without wishing to be speculative I’d suggest it’s theoretically possible for it to be replaced by alternative services. A good topic that I may come with an idea in said thread.
