Checking out on a journey booked on LNER my friend reported this text and is now worried:

Supported hours for collection
Monday to Friday: 06:10-13:00
Saturday: 08:00-12:00
Sunday: unavailable

He knows the station has a ticket machine, National Rail website confirms this.

He knows the ticket machine is in the open air and available.

Just for reassurance, is the general consensus here that the warning above merely refers to an actual person being in the ticket office (ie ticket office open) rather than the ability to collect tickets from a machine.

I’m assuming it’s the former, because if it’s the latter for many stations collection would be simply impossible all day on a Sunday and other afternoons.

Yes, these are the ticket office hours. You should be able to collect tickets from a machine at any time. You can collect them at a different station too or a day before travel if it's more convenient.

The only kinds of stations where those times (which reflect the ticket office opening times) would actually be relevant are Merseyrail stations. They don't allow ToD bookings to be collected at their TVMs, so you have to go to a ticket office.

Or stations, such as my local, where all of the TVMs are locked inside the station buildings when the ticket office is closed.

I don't regard them as entirely irrelevant when they refer to stations with only one TVM, as I feel much more comfortable waiting until the day of travel to collect if there's two machines (the TVM and the TIS in the ticket office) that would have to be unavailable in order to thwart me. If the ticket office is closed and there's only one TVM, that's a risk.

Not excluding out of area, all of them (except where completely absent) except for some reason Ellesmere Port. There are also very few TVMs, and the only ones I know of that are not inside the ticket office (and thus would be closed if it was) are the unstaffed stations south of Hooton.
