Following on from two recent(ish) posts by @stadler on the excellent Different Driver Depot, Route and Traction Cards and Different Guard Depot, Route and Traction Cards threads run by @craigybagel and (largely) @Horizon22 respectively, I've decided to collate the depot information for Iarnród Éireann traincrew. I will endeavour to keep this up to date but am reliant on information from others - if you notice any mistakes please do let me know and I'll update the list as soon as possible. Thanks very much for doing this. I would assume Rosslare is going to be low single figures and 22k/2900 for traction but I defer to @berneyarms and @Thewanderer for all things operational at Irish Rail!

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

As far as the lack of guards goes, the explanation for that is fairly simple; IR is almost entirely a DOO operation. Guards are only required on passenger trains that cross the border and run into Northern Ireland - hence the small complement at Dublin to run the Irish Rail staffed Enterprise services, and the guard at Dundalk for the twice daily Newry extension of the suburban services from Dublin.

Many services outside of the Dublin Suburban area carry other staff onboard for revenue and customer services, but as far as I know they're not actually required for the running of the train.

My pleasure! I find it fascinating.

That would explain it - thank you, I hadn't realised how far over to DOO IÉ had switched.

I really have found it interesting reading the drivers establishment lists as someone who use to write and allocate duties for drivers at my own depot during special working periods. What does have me rather confused, (not hard I know!) is Mullingar with one driver, do they do the same duty every day with the same rest days, how is annual leave or sickness covered etc?

I'm surprised Heuston drivers don't sign Limerick, years ago I rode down from Heuston to Limerick via the direct curve on the 10:45 x Heuston with a Heuston based driver.

I'm surprised Heuston drivers don't sign Limerick, years ago I rode down from Heuston to Limerick via the direct curve on the 10:45 x Heuston with a Heuston based driver.
Heuston have no work to Limerick now for a number of years with the last remaining job being the 1325 HN / LK, 1620 LK / HN on Sundays. Only have one job to Limerick for a big depot it was proving hard to resource so Limerick took it over. Weekdays Limerick directs are only peak hours only and Limerick work these. e.g. work up to Heuston and travel back to Limerick (2 jobs) or Limerick Jct. (2 jobs) to work a Limerick train in from the Jct.

In the afternoon 3 drivers travel to Heuston to work the 3 evening peak trains to Limerick. Of these 3, 1 travels all the way and 2 work a train to Limerick Jct. and then travel to Dublin. Handing the train over to the 2 drivers travelling ex Dublin from the morning.

I guess the Mullingar driver just inter-works with the Longford ones? There isn't even a service that originates at Mullingar for them to start with is there? There is the 2050 from Dublin though that terminates there.

The Mullingar driver works one of the evening Longfords - not 100% sure which one and travels back to Mullingar once the train is disposed of in Longford. Technically I think he comes under Longford but there is a longstanding agreement that he is Mullingar based as I'm sure he was based there even before Longford came a drivers depot.
I presume that the Portlaoise guards are for engineering trains out of the PW yard there.

Correct. PWD Guards.

Ah gotcha. Does the 2050 have a taxi ride / company car on the end of it then?

Reopened for @craigybagel to update
Thank you.

Having spoken to a Rosslare driver on Facebook, I can confirm the depot is indeed still open, with a complement of 5 drivers for 4 daily diagrams (2 on weekends). As stated previously, Waterford covers any AL or sickness as there is no spare coverage at Rosslare at all.

Were you able to find out what rolling stock that Rosslare depot sign? Is it just 22000 and 29000 or do they also sign 071 and 201 stock like Waterford do?

To be fair, I didn't ask but I can't see how or why they'd be competent on locus these days. Waterford sign them for all the freight work they do, but there hasn't been any freight or regular loco hauled passenger services down the Rosslare line in decades.

I suppose it probably is just 22000 and 29000 multiple unit stock that Rosslare sign. I was wondering if they got any work on the 071 and 201 empty stock or maintenance trains that occasionally operate over the old Waterford to Rosslare line. But i suppose those are worked by Waterford drivers or probably the Portlaoise Permanent Way drivers.

Up the creek
I am surprised that Dundalk and Drogheda, or at least the latter, don‘t go through to Grand Canal Dock, but have Pearse as their limit.

Only thing that's been over the South Wexford for the last few years has been track machines. It isn't even accessible as a through line at the moment - the Suir Bridge was damaged and I believe has been left open to river traffic

To be fair, I'd be very surprised if they don't go through to GCD now. Some of the info on this thread is rather old.

As per the discussion on the Enterprise thread, it's probably worth noting that some Drogheda drivers now sign 201/DD, and the route from Dundalk through to Belfast.

If you are an IE employee, posting this could land you in hot water.
Its also inaccurate.
I think we can be fairly sure @InkyScrolls doesn't work for IE :)

Simply telling people it's inaccurate isn't particularly helpful to people reading this thread. I appreciate you have to be careful what you post, but you can always anonymously send corrections in via PM.

So by your logic it is okay for an IE employee to swear at passengers (as you admitted to doing in the thread about IE revenue protection a few months ago) but not okay for an IE employee to simply post details of which routes and rolling stocks each depot sign. Dont be so ridiculous. Nobody at IE is going to care about these details being publicly available (regardless of whether the person posting them is an employee) as it is nothing sensitive or safety related. It is just basic information about which routes and rolling stocks they sign and how many drivers are at each depot. Such information has even been published by IE under the FOI act before.

Would you like to correct me then, as is the point of this thread?
In defence of @dubscottie , Irish Rail is a lot more protective of internal information than is the case in the UK. The weekly notices, which contain a lot more useful information about train running than what you'll find in the UK, come with a specific warning on the front cover that they are not too bad shared with the public, to give one such example. There's also no equivalent of Real Time Trains. It's entirely plausible that an Irish Rail employee posting this information directly is in breach of their contract.

Also, as the person who maintains the equivalent route & traction knowledge thread for the UK, quite a lot of information there is provided anonymously to me directly as well, to avoid any issues with social media policies. When making changes about my own employer's info, I'm very careful to do only when it becomes public knowledge.

Most of the information in this thread came from a post on the Irish forum boards.ie - so I can not comment on who actually supplied it originally. There were many issues with that original data however, which has been corrected over the years.

If there are any IÉ employees who would like to help update this thread and point out any corrections, but have concerns, they are more than welcome to message me in the same way and I'll ensure that the thread is changed without reference to who is responsible.

The Barrow Bridge. The Suir Bridge was just West of Waterford on the old line to Dungarvan and Mallow. ;)
Thanks - even as I was typing it I was thinking it's the wrong direction for the Suir, but could not for the life of me remember which river it actually was!

Irish Rail are definitely a lot less happy to publish information than our TOCs but i would have thought something as simple as which routes and rolling stocks each depot signs would be fine for an employee to share.

I also found this on the FOI records page of the Irish Rail website from last year which is basically the same information as this thread so they clearly have no issue with this information being publicly available.

I know they are much more sensitive about stuff they consider safety related. For example the working timetables for Irish Rail (and for Northern Ireland Railways as well) are not published and get refused under the FOI act for safety concerns. Even though the UK releases them they still do not. I am sure an employee would probably get in trouble for sharing the working timetable but i can not imagine them having any issues for sharing this.

I see from those tables that there no longer appears to be a driver's Depot at Rosslare and that Waterford drivers now sign Rosslare-Dublin Connolly. Is there a small link at Waterford outbased at Rosslare....or do Waterford drivers travel pass by bus, taxi or company van to and from Rosslare as part of their shifts?

I suspect that this sensitivity stems from valid security concerns, as there are still a few rogue terrorist groups operating on both sides of the border....and trains have had bombs planted on them in the past, with fatal consequences in a least once instance.

Thanks. Must have missed those....but why is Rosslare depot not shown in the tables supplied in response to the FOI request? Clerical error perhaps?
Rosslare was mentioned as being an "outroad depot of Waterford" on Facebook. Whether that means the 5 drivers there are considered as part of the Waterford 28, or it was just an omission on the FOI request, I can't say.

Certainly I've noticed a couple of other issues that I suspect are mistakes on the FOI - if I'm reading it correctly it implies that Connolly drivers are only allowed to shunt DD stock and not drive them in service, which doesn't seem plausible (no doubt there maybe some drivers with such a restriction but surely not all?!), and that Ballina drivers don't sign Manulla to Athlone but do sign Manulla to Westport, which also seems rather odd.
