Odd reason for WCML delay 14/07/25

Currently sitting on 9S65 Euston to Glasgow at Penrith.

Train Manager has just announced we will be here for an unspecified amount of time due to ‘police incident tape caught in the overhead wires’.

Must admit, as explanations go, it’s a new one on me.

It's unusually specific but if a pantograph wrapped itself round the tape it could easily pull an awful lot of the OLE down so fair enough for getting somebody out to take it out.

Gosh, that's been going on all day then.

I popped to Penrith station at around 9.30 this morning to print out some pre-booked tickets from the machine and overheard an announcement that the TPE Liverpool Lime Street train was cancelled for the same reason. No idea why it's still causing a problem- surely it doesn't take that long to remove some tape?

No, that was due to the failure of the electricity supply at Rutherglen this morning.

Disruption from that incident had just about recovered when the fatality near Tamworth occurred.

Then you had this OLE issue near Abington.

Objects blown onto the wires from third party land are nothing uncommon. I was held up on the East Coast line by agricultural polythene for example.

It depends what time, but morning WCML services from Glasgow were disrupted by the power failure at Rutherglen.

In the afternoon it would've been the 'foreign body/item' on the OLE near Abington.

The 0744 Glasgow to Liverpool (and 1212 return) was certainly cancelled for the former reason.
