And of course means that any public indignation is because “this is excessive” (ie the way they want it to be) rather than in favour of tighter controls.
Exactly that. It's the same with the voluntary quantity restrictions for customers buying paracetamol. It shows that retailers are mitigating the risks of intentional overdoses and hopefully avoids legislation to have paracetamol be a pharmacy or behind the counter only product, as it is in some countries.

Flies
How come the little bu**ers can fly in through a partially open window, but seem incapable of flying out through a wide open door..??
And, other than possibly being food source for spiders, birds and something-or-other species:
1) why does nature  need so many different types of flies?
2) why can't they just sit outside and wait to be eaten by their predators?
3) and, before someone in history saw them flying and called them a fly, what were they called? "Look Og: there, motionless on the wall of our hut, it's a - ummm - it's - what do we call it?"

Drivers who, when they arrive at the toll booths on the M6 Toll, then decide it is time to locate their phone / card to effect payment, rather than having done it whilst queuing for said toll both for the previous minute or so, or at any point in the previous 12-15 miles after entering the rosd designated M6 Toll.

I feel this is Public Information, hopefully for the benefit of others, don’t make this mistake.

In Home Bargains today. Piled high at the entrance were boxes of Brooklyn 4.6% Pilsner Lager. Large 660ml bottles and only £1.00 per bottle. What was there not to like? Well pretty much everything.

The good news is that at only £1.00 it was cheap. The bad news is that at only £1.00 I bought it. The good news was that it was a large 660ml bottle. The bad news is that it was a large 660ml bottle. Even worse I bought two bottles. It’s only saving grace is that it probably makes Foster’s taste good (or less bad).

So if you see it in your local Home Bargains, or any other store, give it a wide berth.

A problem is that the pharmaceutical companies add paracetamol to virtually every painkiller so it needs a lot of care to know how much you have taken

With the gold and black label? I love it. Unusually, so does Mrs BR who will otherwise only ever drink proper German beers.

And the reason it tastes so good? Brewed in Wolverhampton (for now, at least), with the local water. Hence the gold and black label ;)

The UK’s first 2025 hosepipe ban has been declared in Yorkshire.
My irritation with this, is not the hosepipe ban, but in this day & age we use treated clean ‘drinking’ water to flush the toilet. I don’t know the answer, but there must be a way to store and use rainwater when available, and only use treated water when not.

You have to be really inattentive to take a fatal dose, which is something more than the two packets that supermarkets will sell you. It’s only really to prevent “impulse” purchases of enough to deliberately kill yourself with that they limit the amount you can buy in one go.

How come supermarkets will sell two but Poundland will sell you three?

Spiders. I'm not scared of them or anything but this morning one of the bastards was in my loaf of bread hiding in the air pockets and I only noticed it when it crawled out from under the cheese, seconds before I was going to eat it.

I actively encourage spiders and take good care of them....because they eat flies, of which we have hundreds in the Summer. Granted it must have been rather disconcerting to find one in your sandwich....especially if you were vegetarian! o_O

Because it's not legislated for, so there's some leniency around setting a limit on a shop by shop basis
It is legislated for, but the limit is 100 capsules.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society did contact Poundland to ask them to ditch their '3-for-£1' offer on paracetamol and ibuprofen but they declined.

I'd be in favour of changing the legislation to max 32 tablets (of the legislated general sale dose).

I had a funny one once in Tesco where they refused to sell me 2x paracetamol and 2x ibuprofen at the same time, adamant that it was a max of 2 packets combined. I didn't bother arguing but it did strike me that either the staff member didn't know company policy, or the company policy was just bizarre given how the two drugs work.

When I worked at Morrisons the policy was exactly that - a maximum of any 2 products containing paracetamol or ibuprofen. It's a retail store, not a pharmacy with specially trained staff, simplicity is key.

I would ban anyone from scraping metal on metal. Too many traumatic days in my childhood from school dinner ladies.

What's worse than finding a spider in your sandwich?

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Since the dawn of time but especially this week, the smell of New York City in the height of summer. Like a hundred different varieties of fermenting bin juice competing for the attention of my nostrils.

Advert blocking browser extensions which …. create pop-up adverts exhorting you to pay for the “full” version of the software.

Excessive adverts.

I might not bother with an adblocker if adverts weren't so intrusive. Local news websites are awful for it; many of them are barely navigable on mobile devices because the sheer number and placement of ads mean you can't fit a whole paragraph into the remaining space. Because there's a video in the top left and an unclosable flashing banner ad at the bottom and like 50 ads in the main panel, the page becomes unresponsive and laggy.

On the BBC Good Food website, without an adblocker, you get these banner ads taking up the entire whitespace to the left and right of the centre content. They're sometimes animated, and means there's about 50% of the whole page set so that if you accidentally click there, it opens an advert's site in a new tab.

Then you've got the stupid navigation interference, where when you click the 'back' button, it simply jumps to another part of the page showing other articles. You have to click/tap back 3 or 4 times on some sites to get off the page.

Autoplaying video adverts with audio enabled by default.

Do you accept cookies? Here's a big green 'accept all' button, but if you want to only essential cookies you have to toggle 20 sliders to turn off the rest of the cookies.

Also hilariously large untargetted ads - for context, I am male, neither me nor my partner are pregnant. I appreciate this is because I normally use an extension which blocks tracking cookies, but you'd think for a full-page advert you might choose something more generic! This part of the page is basically 95% adverts.

Exactly!

Thing is, these ads must work to an extent for them to keep running them. I suspect older users are more likely to click on dodgy looking adverts so maybe that factors in?

If you have an Android phone, you can permanently block all adverts by fiddling around with something just inside the charging port.

With the more recent addition of the smell of ‘jazzy cigarettes’ on every street corner in midtown Manhattan.
