Can anyone confirm which 800 and 802 routes or services are DOO currently? I have never fully understood how it works. I have travelled on the London to Didcot and Oxford route run by 800 and 802 stock and on the London to Newbury and Bedwyn route run by 800 and 802 stock many times over the years and sometimes it is DOO and sometimes there is a guard onboard. What is the criteria for which 800 and 802 services are DOO and which must have a guard onboard?

The Oxfords require a guard if they are stopping at Radley.
I'm sure @JN114 can kindly provide us with chapter & verse! :D

An 80x can only operate DOO on the London to Oxford services in a 5 or 9 car formation, they require mandatory dispatch from all stations by station staff either in the form of baton/flags/lights or CD/RA

To stop at any unstaffed station such as Radley you would require a TM.

They are not permitted to operate anywhere else DOO in service.

You can’t for example have a Worcester to Paddington service run with a TM to Oxford and then DOO to Pad

There are some late night/early morning services that may operate with a TM due to there being no dispatch staff at stations such as Twyford/Maidenhead/Dicot Parkway

The few times I’ve done a Pad to Reading Shuttle with an 800 I’ve always been provided with a TM

Bedwyn services are only required to run with a TM from Reading to Bedwyn, they can be DOO from Paddington to Reading as the route is fully within the DOO boundary

In essence:-

There’s a DOO geographical area - essentially Paddington to Bedwyn and Banbury, plus Thames branches.

IET-operated services may run DOO(P) if their whole, originally timetabled journey starts AND ends within that geographical area.

Such trains must be dispatched by station staff at stations; so that introduces requirements for guards for services that stop at unstaffed stations a la @FGW_DID ‘s Radley example above.

Ordinarily the only staffed stations are Padd, Slough, Maidenhead, Reading, Didcot and Banbury. Twyford is sometimes staffed.

10 cars aren’t permitted DOO(P).

Any IET-operated service that goes outside the DOO area for any part of its journey; must have a guard for its entire journey.

The same rules do NOT apply to 16x, 230 or 387 - they may run DOO at any time within the DOO area; whether part-journey or not.

No other GWR traction is currently approved for DOO(P) operation at present.

***

So Paddington <> Oxford services are likely DOO(P)

Paddington <> Bedwyn services are normally DOO(P) to/from Reading then guard beyond.

What does the (P) stand for?

Are there any rules specific to managing disruption on the day, that are more relaxed than those rules dictating the planning of the service? For example whether a train can run DOO(P) within the DOO geographical area during times of disruption when traincrew are displaced etc.

So for example could a Worcester-Paddington service operate DOO Oxford/Reading-Paddington if a guard is not available despite being diagrammed?

No, the rules apply at all times.
