Person under train northbound out of Huntingdon. :(

Won't make commuting out of KGX very clever tonight!

Update - confirmed it's a fatality.

Now if only Ely-March-Peterborough was electrified, things would be a lot better.

Not electrifying an obvious diversionary route is extremely shortsighted.
Ah well ..... but that's the way we do things in Brtitain.

The chaos has begun. All trains heading south from Doncaster are now delayed or cancelled. Hull Trains service arrived into Doncaster, only for the train manager to come onto the tannoy suddenly to announce the train was cancelled. This hadn't been announced on the station and the train even had a clear signal for the route!

The Hull train could have been routed via March-Ely-Cambridge avoiding Huntingdon as it is deisel powered.

Assuming the guard and driver on board actually signed that route. I'm not sure if all (or any for that matter) of HTs staff do.

1D19 KGX-LDS was 2 late passing Sandy, then 68 late passing Huntingdon. It was 72 late passing Peterborough yet only predicted to be 36 late at Grantham. Someone thought that PBO-GRA can be done in 1 minute.

It seems that things might have started to move. 1S25 KGX-EDB is only 3 late passing Huntingdon, where most previous trains were delayed.

Seen an EC service pulling out of PBO, maybe southbound has reopened?

1Y38? Departed PBO at 1710, only 21 late.

Poor old ECML doesn't half seem susceptible to this sort of thing. Not that I think it's anybody's fault, of course!

1D19 is now logged as having passed Grantham at 1719, Retford at 1703 and Doncaster at 1720. Somebody has a sense of humour.

Person concerned by all accounts sat facing the train in the middle of the track - you can't stop someone if they set on doing this.

Line reopened at 16:34 with disruption expected until 18:00.

Thoughts are with the traincrew and others who have to deal with this incident.

Yep, I arrived at Huntingdon at about 15:40, just as the 1st ambulance arrived. You could see a halted trained 400yds up the track. Over the next 10 mins, more ambulance and police arrived. I got a taxi back to PBO rather than hang about.

Wasnt the Leeds - Doncaster line shut on Tuesday because of something similar?

3 year old girl and her dad hit by an HST at Adwick or something...

Shame the psych services didn't get to the guy quicker really.

But not with the person who was so troubled that they saw no alternative to ending their life in this way? Or with their family and friends?

I have very little sympathy for someone who does it this way. For all we know this could scar the driver's life permanently. Why they chose to have to involve someone else because they can't deal with their own life, and cause damage to theirs, to me, is a little bit selfish. My thoughts are with the family and friends, but not the person.

There always seems to be something against people who commit suicide on the railway.

Fans of the forums tend to believe that people in this position are selfish for putting the train driver at stress etc.

+1 MattE, I have very little time for someone who wants to endanger the lives of everyone on a train or around him because he feels like he has to end their own life!

So you don't think it's tragic that someone has put themselves in that position in the first place?

They might have endangered passengers and the driver - but they were the only one killed.

I seriously question people's sense of morality and empathy for others sometimes.

I think a few on here need to realise that someone who does somethng as desperate as sitting on a rail line 'till a train smashes them to bits isn't a rationally thinking person. Think of it as mental illness if you like - these people can not be judged in the same way you would judge a sane and untroubled person.

For once, I agree with you.

So do I. This is tragic for everyone involved. What must that person have gone through to drive them to that point?

Exactly.

It's upsetting that they're in that state of mind in the first place - even more upsetting that people seem to think they're selfish in their death.

Yeah, i do have sympathy for the person and how they were, but it is selfish and could cause future problems for other people (including the train staff and also the emergency services as surely it isnt nice for them to see the remains either. Thoughts also with the involved friends and family.

As upsetting as it is for the emergency services and train drivers etc, i'm sure there are protocols in place for events like this.

The emergency services may deal with people dying everyday - fair enough it doesn't make it less upsetting for them, but it allows them to build a tolerance to it, so I don't think you can really say that here.

My thoughts obviously go to the individuals family, but always to the driver and train crew who had to deal with this awful incident- as its "tea time" I won't go into how what the train crews may see in such incidents could scar them for life

True story. Near me, a chappie was hit by a train going full tilt, they managed to find most of the body parts. A week later, a hand was found in the shrubbery of beer garden of a pub 50yds from the railway line.
