I've had a go on this service a couple of times the last two days.
First observation is that the Maastricht - Liege portion is still operated by SNCB units. Is this meant to be a temporary arrangements and Arriva Flirts are meant to operate through? Does anyone know if there are any through diagrams already in operation?
On the two days I wanted to try the service the performance was a disaster. I can't quite work out whether the problems were RE18's own or they just get shafted by perennial German delays. Yesterday I wanted the 1647 from Aachen - it was only announced as cancelled very close to departure time. Then the 1717 eventually turned up and left 15 minutes late to then be terminated at Heerlen. The 1747 ex Aachen also didn't run because the unit wasn't in the right place from earlier delays. Certainly had the RE18s ran into Aachen on time they'd have been shafted by all the late-running German trains occupying platforms at all the wrong times. To make matters worse the Stoptrein everyone was direct to from Heerlen to Maastricht didn't have working air-con.
Is this the normal order of the day?
As an aside (as it's my thread I'll define permissible thread drift), Belgian trains really are leisurely. The old EMUs working the Maastricht - Liege take an age to get going - our 172s and 195s would leave them in the dust. I also had the pleasure of the S41 between Liege and Aachen - an S-bahn service worked with intercity coaching stock. It was a brilliantly scenic ride but my goodness the amount of time that could be saved if the service could be timed to SNCB's Desiro Mainline performance.
