The same as at Castlefield in Manchester and at Marsh Lane in Leeds.

If Bowring Park Road were diverted North of the railway to Thomas Lane then the main obstruction could be removed. They are all local roads.

You can see what's in the way and what isn't from the L - M cab rides on You Tube.

The link to the old CLC line to Hunts Cross would then be possible as it's the South part of this line that has potential; the North part to Aintree goes nowhere.

What traffic would use that link?

The route passes from Halewood/Hunts Cross through Gateacre and Childwall and potentially on to Lime Street, if a connection could be contrived at Broad Green. It would then give much of the rest of South Liverpool a train service to the Centre. Unfortunately previous emphasis has been given to the Outer Loop idea, ignoring the radial nature of the south end of the route.

This is really approaching speculative discussion, so I shall say no more.

They've spent the last week putting up nice new signs explaining that the subway is shut and you have to walk around the block, then today they've covered the signs up and re-opened the subway! All very odd, but it's a relief to be able to cross under the tracks again.

Virtually zero progress, but as long as the subway remains open the only really downside to it being "unfinished" is the lack of a ticket office.

They have started staffing the station now. Every time I go through there's one or two people in orange high vis just sat on the platforms playing with their phones. I shudder to think how much their wages will add up to once this is all finally completed.

Apologies if it’s been explained up-thread but why is the Broad Green lift project being managed by Northern rather than Network Rail, which basically ‘owns’ all structures?

(The reason that I ask is that the Dore & Totley station re-modelling and lifts was led by Network Rail even though Dore & Totley is a Northern station on my local Hope Valley Line. Sure this project was also years late and way over original estimate anyway and done as part of the wider Hope Valley upgrade.)

According the Liverpool Echo, Merseyrail are taking over this work from Northern as Northern lack competence to complete.

They don't mean Merseyrail, they mean Merseytravel which, in today's money, is TfLCR.

Merseyrail steps in to complete station work delayed by two years - 'absolutely appalling'

Northern were appointed to deliver the scheme which had been earmarked for completion in 2023"

Most station lift schemes seem to be led by Network Rail. Anyone got any idea why Northern were given a project that was rather out of their ‘day job’ expertise?

I think from reading a previous thread on broad green they where the second contractor not capable of completing the project . They have failed before but never paid any money back .

The fella quoted, Neil Grabham, is MD at Merseyrail. I think they do mean Merseyrail completing the work on behalf of Merseytravel.

According to the Birkenhead News our Metro Mayor has instructed Merseytravel to take over this project and complete it. More fine words from our Metro Mayor!

I saw this, in addition to this article on the Liverpool Echo.

I at first thought that this was a journalistic error and that that it was Merseytravel who had taken over the project management - but it is actually indeed Merseyrail (Electrics 2002 Ltd) who have been delegated responsibility by the LCRCA, as quoted by Merseyrail's MD below. I am guessing because Broadgreen was part of the the 'Access For All' programme, which covered five stations: four managed by Merseyrail and one by Northern - Merseyrail's four have now been completed.

Merseyrail steps in to complete station work delayed by two years - 'absolutely appalling'

Merseyrail has been brought in to finish work at a Liverpool train station that is two years late. In January, Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram put rail operator Northern "on notice" as he slammed “absolutely unacceptable” delays to deliver an accessibility scheme at Broadgreen train station.

A £1.2m scheme to make the site in L14 more user friendly for those with mobility constraints had been expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

Now, Merseyrail bosses have confirmed to the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s transport committee they will be brought on to complete the work Northern had been tasked to do.

Jamie Ross, the city region’s director of transport, said the delays were “wholly unacceptable”. Earlier this year, Mr Rotheram said the delays on the project, led by Northern on behalf of the regional operator, were “absolutely appalling” and would sooner Merseytravel take control.

The Access for All (AfA) programme was launched by the Department for Transport (DfT) in 2006 to address the issues faced by passengers facing mobility constraints such as wheelchair access, heavy baggage, pushchairs, and cycles. The funding is used to create an obstacle free, accessible route from the station entrance to the platform.

The Liverpool City Region’s AfA programme, which included Broad Green and four other stations on the Merseyrail network was approved as a single project with a total £9.8m grant for the period April 2019 to March 31 2024. The four other sites were completed within the timescale.

Works planned for Broadgreen included the installation of two lifts on each platform. Northern, as the station operator, led on the project on behalf of Merseytravel.

Neil Grabham, Merseyrail managing director, said his team were now in place to complete the work. He said: “This is a Northern station and I’m aware of the challenges that have been there in terms of the programme of works for the lifts at Broadgreen.

"I’m pleased to say Merseyrail have been asked to step in and support Northern, we’ll be taking over responsibility for the delivery of those works.

"The works we’ve done for the installation of those lifts for the access for all scheme has been regarded as being an exemplar across the industry, so we offered to help and we’ve been taken up on that offer.

"We’ve now surveyed the work that is required and we’re in final conversations about getting started to sort out what needs to be done at Broadgreen.” At the start of the year, a financial completion date was earmarked for March 31, 2027.

Jamie Ross, Liverpool City Region director of transport said the delays were “wholly unacceptable for people using that station.” He said: “I think we’re all extremely disappointed with what’s happened at Broadgreen.

"Funding was provided to Northern and they should have completed the scheme by the end of 2023. The Mayor and the leaders are exceptionally frustrated by this and escalated it, and correspondence has gone to ministerial level in the Department for Transport.”

Northern were approached for comment.

I have more confidence in Merseyrail completing the work satisfactorily than I ever did with Northern.

They need to do the same with Lea Green station, which after a year from being constructed has still no opening date in sight.

Clearly the idea of a TOC running local services in both Chathill and Stoke-on-Trent (200 miles + apart) doesn't really work.

Inevitably such a TOC is going to lack focused local knowledge, understanding, presence and incentive and will be remote, both in perception and actuality, from much of its geographical area of operation.

The political conversations in Greater Manchester and now Liverpool City Region suggest that this current mode of operation is approaching the end of its shelf life.

As you say it wouldn't work, Northern was always divided into sections (internally) because of it's size for management purposes. The sections recently were altered to align better with the various major areas such as one management team for Merseyside and one for Greater Manchester etc.

The main problem has been poorly chosen and unreliable contractors going bankrupt Vs management issues.

Allegedly it needs to be demolished and rebuilt! Will be completely outrageous if that is the case!

Something to do with not taking into account of the increased weight of EV's and that it would be overloaded if too many are using it? I imagine that is a concern for many older multi storey car parks tbh!

I could never understand TPE choosing to stop at Lea Green and not at St Helens Junction were the car park was massively extended but is now under used.

Would presume that is wibble.

Not sure a 2 tonne Tesla Model Y is heavier than a 2.5 tonne Range Rover

Cars in general are getting heavier though, even minis are massive now so the average weight of all cars is increasing, which is nothing to do with EVs.

The article suggests that the work is still in the replanning phase.
