In the last couple of weeks enabling and foundation works for the new footbridge have commenced at the south end of the platform, whether or not this will be ready for the new season remains to be seen.
Having known that the stadium was being built over three years ago nothing was done to improve access to Sandhills. Now the authorities seen to have gone into panic mode to provide access to platforms when large large crowds arrive at the same time.
Personally I think that they are wrong not to have considered the building of a third platform and the opening up of passageways closed when the station was reduced frim four to two platforms.

Perhaps they were counting on Everton getting relegated!

Relegated or not they still would have filled the stadium. You only have to look at Leeds and Sunderlands attendances last Season.
I visited Sandhills Station today and the foundations for the footbridgr are progressing.

I do wonder if building an extra footbridge at Sandhills is missing the point. From what I saw online, the biggest complaint about train travel to the test events was getting to Sandhills in the first place. Especially for the ones on Sunday: Merseyrail running only their standard 4-car, 30-minute frequency service meant that trains were full and standing and people were being left behind at stations. Addressing that issue (either by running longer trains, or slotting additional services in to mop up the extra travellers) would seem to be more important.

30 minutes frequency on three routes does equate to a 10 minute frequency
