Ashamed to say, I posted on here a couple of years ago and didn't pursue a train driver application. I'm 40 now and decided now is the right time to go for it! I would like to become a conductor first and really learn and understand the movements of the railway.
I have read and researched a lot for a trainee conductor role. I believe I know what is required for this job. So what is holding me back...well, I have a had quite a lot of customer service roles in my life (post office, retail, food, homeware etc) however these were from many years ago and for short stints 1-3 months each whilst in between uni and other commitments. My last customer facing role was in 2021 - no reference for this now. Since that time I have lived abroad and worked for myself. I don't really have any relevant, and up to date experience or references. I am worried about this. I am thinking of enhancing my experience and skills but getting a temporary factory job before applying - this would enable me to talk about the safety aspects of a job and demonstrate shift work. I believe I would be in a much better position then to apply.
I guess my concern is still with the references and not having up to date customer service experience. Would this matter? How picky are they? I just want to stand a good chance when I apply. I'm a qualified teacher but didn't go into the classroom (only worked as an online tutor).
Advice would be much appreciated!
