Hello, I was recently caught out for fare shorting on a Southeastern service. From looking at advise on this forum it seems the advise is that I should reply to the letter they sent me apologising and asking to settle the matter out of court which I plan on requesting.

(The letter I received is the standard Southeastern letter as received by many others in this forum)

What I would like to know is am I allowed to reply to the letter by email, as the letter sent suggests that I can. It uses the phrasing. Please complete in full the second page of this letter, attaching any comments and send it to the above address within 21 days. Please respond to the address or the email given below

Please could someone let me know if contacting them by email is fine. To my understanding it should be, however I would like some reassurance that someone else has done this before and it has been all fine.

Regards,

Jaque

This is what the letter looks like, this is a screenshot of someone else's but the content is the same except the dates.

The information about the journey is that I travelled from knockholt to Waterloo east. However I purchased a ticket on trainline from London bridge to Waterloo east instead on trainline. When questioned at the station I initially denied doing so but eventually admitted to it. I have done this a total of 4 times previously.

I have 3 other journeys on my account which look suspicious - they start at waterloo east - however I have proof that I paid by oyster to get to waterloo east on those days. Would it be worth providing evidence of this in advance. I also have some journeys which I used a railcard for, however I do actually have a railcard. Again would it be worth sending proof of this.

Another potential issue is some of my tickets purchased on trainline are from another station - Blackheath, however I have proof that I have another address there to explain why I sometimes come from there, also can be seen on my oyster history that I often start journeys there.

Thank you in advance.

With the journeys that started at waterloo east, they were from waterloo east to Bracknell. But again I do have proof I paid to get to waterloo east for the whole journey by Oyster each time.

You can reply by email.

If they are not asking you yet about travel on other occasions I think you might as well wait until they do. Tho it’s highly likely that they will ask but you sound prepared for that.

Ok, thank you.

I will wait for them to ask for further information.

Do you know if their replies would be by email or should I expect another letter?

I can’t recall how they reply. You could check another thread and ask the person whose case it was maybe.

If you answer the information they have asked for by email, I am sure they reply in the same manner.
Easier than the post (and cheaper!)
