Ah, so is the 1 getting extra peak journeys? Or even an enhanced off-peak frequency (every 10 mins)?

One thing that would be nice is to be able to maintain the 15-min off-peak frequency in the peak. For example morning peak arrivals at Southampton are 0815-0840-0905 at the terminus, or around 0810-0835-0900 in the northern part of the city centre.

Five extra buses sounds like a likely significant frequency enhancement: I'd expect only around two vehicles to be needed to maintain off-peak frequency in the busiest peak hour.
Looks like there are currently 9 all-day vehicle duties, with a tenth in the morning peak heading into Winchester (https://bustimes.org/vehicles/blus-1797?date=2025-06-19) which then does other things in the afternoon. So five extra vehicles is an approximately 50% enhancement.
My experience as a not infrequent off peak traveller on BS 1 is that no increase in off peak frequency is justified. I can't comment on peak loadings. However a PVR increase of 5 suggests a 10 minute frequency.

However Hampshire CC, who have just decided not to renew the tender of my local route, appear to have decided to spend some of their precious BSIP money on a frequency increase, no doubt encouraged by GSC.

Unimpressed of semi-rural Hampshire........

Is something you've definitely heard?

I would tend to agree that the 1 does not need any more than a 15-min off-peak frequency. Off-peak loadings are healthy but not overcrowded. Ironically with the fine weather in the last week or so the loadings actually seem a little bit less.

However I do think that peak frequency increases are needed on the 1, to provide a 15-min interval into Southampton in the morning peak and out of Southampton in the evening peak. I can't see this would require as many as 5 extra vehicles, though, and the evening peak extras could be provided by using vehicles on school/college runs. So that just leaves vehicles for the morning peak extras, which would need no more than 2.

Like you, I would have thought that maintaining the 15 minute frequency through the peak say +2 PVR, maybe plus an extra for the Peter Symonds peak flows should be sufficient.

The BSIP money has to be spent soon, and bus priority measures take time to plan and deliver. But I'm guessing where the money for the suggested improvements to the 1 might come from because I doubt they would be commercially justified.

Can someone please give me some travel advice? I have done some research but still have some questions:
I am coming to Bournemouth staying at the Premier Inn at the Pier with three family members. Am I right in thinking there are no direct buses to Poole Quay, you always have to go to Poole bus station and walk or get the ONE. Is there any ticket that covers Bournemouth/Poole and possibly Swanage for adults, either for the day or a few days? Finally, are there toilets at Swanage or Poole bus stations? Thank you

To answer your questions:
There's no bus directly to the quay from Bournemouth, however the open top route 70 goes quite close (5-10 minutes walk from the Old Orchard stop) and makes for a great day out
For tickets, it's best to download the morebus app. A Zone A ticket will cover Bournemouth and Poole for £5 a day or £10.90 for three days. To include Swanage, it would be a zone ABC ticket which is £10.80 for one day.
And both Poole and Swanage bus stations have toilets. I think Poole is pay to enter, but it's not a huge amount. Swanage is free though.

Poole bus station doesn't have public toilets (closed due to antisocial issues), however there are some on the upper level of the adjacent shopping centre, so only a 2-3 minute walk away.

There is perhaps precedent for the "maintaining the off-peak frequency in the peak" option: several of the Bluestar city routes (IIRC the 17, 18, 19/19a and 20) receive extra vehicles at peak times. So perhaps this is the plan for the 1 though, as you say, I can't see that 5 vehicles would be needed.

Trying to do an internet search on forthcoming Bluestar 1 enhancements but getting nothing.

E400MMCs 1201-1232 are currently allocated to the Uni-link services in Southampton

Can anyone confirm what the previous two fleets were used on Uni-link? I believe it was some old style Enviro 400s and their prior to that some Scanias?

You're mostly right, but there's a bit more to it.

The fleet being entirely double-deck only began in 2018. Prior to the arrival of the MMCs, there was quite a bit of variation: 23 Enviro400s numbered 1548-1570, six Volvo B7RLEs 2287-2292, two Scania Omnicity single-deckers 2011/2012, and one Scania Omnidekka 1091. Broadly, the Enviros worked the U1 and U6, while the single-deckers worked the U2 and the Omnidekka (which oddly was new for Uni-link when it was still run by Minvera Accord, but spent a lot of time in the main Bluestar fleet in between) was added when the U2X was introduced. All of the vehicles involved are still working somewhere within Go South Coast, except the B7RLEs which are now 6165-6170 at Go North West.

The E400s and B7RLEs arrived in 2013/14, coinciding with a route change that let the U6 be double-deck worked: it previously ran under the railway arch in Swaythling. So the preceding fleet contained nine Scania Omnicity double-deckers 1301-1309 (later 1151-1159); twelve Scania Omnicity single-deckers 2001-2012, and a handful of second-hand Volvo B7TLs 1310-1313 (later 1910-1913), with the double-deckers restricted to the U1 and U9. The single-deckers came in three batches: 2001 was new to Minvera Accord in 2006, 2002-2009 were new in 2008, and 2011-12 (which stayed on after the new buses arrived) were added in 2011. The double-deck Scanias are still in service with Morebus, and a few of the single-deckers have survived too. Remarkably 1910, the oldest of the B7TLs, was still with Bluestar as a driver trainer until late last year.

The E400 classics are still knocking around Southampton, split between the Bluestar depots. The 17 is where Totton's allocation generally end up.

Didn't 1091 spend a period in a co-branded livery?

On the subject of Uni-link, what's the reason for the changeover of U2 timings around mid-day? (term-time timetable)

I presume it's something to do with differing start times for lectures in the morning compared to the afternoon?

Ah, I never knew the 200x were ex Uni-link vehicles. I remember these were out and about with Bluestar quite recently, mostly on the 10/13/14/20 around late 2023 and early 2024. Some were in Southern Vectis livery so presumably spent time over thre.

No idea about the timetable but as a student I can tell you lectures start at xx00 and end xx45 all day. However there will be bigger flows into the uni in the morning and out in the afternoon as most people will have multiple lectures and stay on campus between them.

Indeed it did, until 2014. My only picture of it in that time shows the branding very poorly, but there are better images available on Flickr if you search them out - including from when it was numbered 1035 instead of 1091, which I'd forgotten all about. I never saw it on a Uni-link route in that period, only Bluestar.

The history of that batch is pretty confusing, and some of them have spent three separate spells in Southampton - on Uni-link from new until 2013, then again from 2018 to 2019 to facilitate the introduction of route 7, then from 2023 to present/withdrawal following First pulling out. The Southern Vectis livery dates from the time in between the two most recent occurrences, with the 2013-2018 gap being spent with Morebus. A few examples also worked in Plymouth and Swindon at different times, and just to make things even more complicated 2009 has wound up back with Morebus again!

Ah, that makes sense - the extra bus in the morning (on top of the standard 4 buses per hour) arrives at the interchange at xx49, and then in the afternoon the extra bus leaves at xx53.

However this extra bus goes up to Chamberlain halls, so it's not a simple case of the xx49 turning round and forming the xx53 - hence the need for a differing morning and afternoon timetable.

Morebus has a pretty good Tap On, Tap Off system which ensures each person doesn't pay more than the cost of a one-person day ticket

If four of your are travelling together, then a group ticket could be worth considering.

Thank you. Tap on and Tap off it will be. Makes everything so much easier and I have to say their timetables and maps are very informative, although I still had a couple of queries hence my questions. The Go Ahead group seems to be the best for doing route and timetable information.

The Swanage Bus Station (its bus stops outside the heritage railway station) toilets are on the railway station platform. To access them you have to go through the booking hall and onto the platform. They have been closed from time to time due to serviceability issues (blocked drains). There are public toilets about 200 yards away which are more reliable.

There appears to have been a rather nasty accident involving one of the Barton Peveril college runs this morning; the 607 is reported to have left the carriageway into a river/ditch in Eastleigh.

Bustimes.org suggests that this morning’s allocated vehicle was 1267, BX09 PGF, which would agree with the images in the various news articles. Children injured, not good. Best wishes to all on board.

On the subject of the extra buses for the 1, I do remember that before Covid in particular, there were a number of peak-hour "shorts" from Southampton to Chandlers Ford ASDA and v.v, to support the business park in that area.

As another theory as to the need for the extra buses from Sep, I wonder if they are planning to re-introduce some of these "shorts" ?

I have just returned from Bournemouth and have to say the “MORE” services are excellent. The buses are reliable, clean and with friendly patient drivers who always wait for the last elderly person to sit down. The usual excellent Go Ahead app should be a blueprint for others.
There was some late running on the Breezer 50 to Swanage, at times 10 minutes but the chain ferry does not help. The morning Breezer buses from Bournemouth are very full but the lovely weather encouraged that. The few non locals I spoke to, said they did not know that buses were this good nowadays!
I am not sure I like the rather “in your face” livery, perhaps a yellow or green livery would have been appropriate and relevant.
We used a number of services in Bournemouth and Poole and were always impressed.

I agree that the More livery is a bit blah. Since childhood holiday trips I've always associated Bournemouth with yellow buses (and trolley buses but perhaps that's going back a bit too far). Seriously think that GSC should consider yellow branding for Bournemouth operations.

You were lucky if the 50 was only ten minutes late. That is the mis-alignment between a 30 minute bus headway and a 20 minute ferry service and the 50 timetable still hasn't been adjusted to account for this.

The 50 can routinely run up to 2 hours late on good weather days during the summer. Journeys can easily take in excess of 3 hours between Swanage and Bournemouth on summer evenings when buses are forced to join 2 hour long queues for the ferry on the Studland side. Since changes in 2021, buses are no longer permitted to pass the queuing traffic on Ferry Road in order to jump the queue. Added to that, Sandbanks gridlocks on warm evenings until around 2300. Last year's record went to an 1825 ex Swanage 50 which eventually arrived in Bournemouth at 2230, 3 hours late. It's nothing out of the ordinary for the 50 in the summer.

Seems a strange decision.

Seems a strange decision.
A decision taken by the ferry company who own the road. The public highway ends at Knoll Beach. It is highly likely this entire stretch of road will become a toll road next year. The ferry company is currently awaiting government approval.

Surely not a toll for the road as well as a charge for the ferry?!

That would essentially require the whole company livery and identity to be changed, as buses work between Bomo and Poole interchangeably. That’s very unlikely to be something that Go Ahead consider to be worthwhile, it would also mean they were effectively adopting the livery of another company who went out of business (don’t forget the GSC didn’t buy out Yellow Buses, they simply started more routes to replace their services). The latter issue might also mean that there is a reluctance to do a heritage livery, which would otherwise be a nice touch, as again GSC don’t and never have owned the company.

I don’t mine the More livery, the biggest issue with it is the poor state of much of the fleet’s paintwork IMHO. The Volvo/Wrights for example are well overdue fresh paint, and mis-matched replacement panels seems to be pretty much a standard feature of the livery on these in particular!

The chain ferry was going backwards and forwards when I was there. Wow, I am shocked that the bus has to join the queue. I can remember when it didn’t. Best of luck to “more” operating these services and its summer passengers.
