I am only doing this because it is cheap for such a long day out and i get to travel along some routes i have never been on.

I was on a HST from Didcot Parkway through to Swindon, only twenty minutes but loved every moment of it.

I just stand in the vestibule and stick my head out of the window. Bliss, especially at 125 over the rolling fields of West Berkshire and Wiltshire...

Sept 10 is also the day of the rescheduled pompey pacific from Bishops Lydeard by either 34046 'Braunton' or 70000 ‘Britannia’

I agree, absolutely the best way to appreciate a HST, or any train if ya can. What are FGW staff like with window hangers?

Dunno, every time I here a door go from the carriage end, I just pull my head in, wait for them to pass, and resume

Nothing wrong with the FGW refurbished HSTs! Might consider doing this.

Only ever once (I commute from Newbury to Paddington daily, although not always hanging out...) been told off for this and it was by a grumpy dispatcher at Reading as we were departing. I just smiled at him and carried on.

Never had a problem with any on-train staff regarding hanging out the window.

An HST and a Bullied pacific at Pompey on the same day, thats worth a trip out with the camara i think! :)

I know, i forgot that steam special was there on the same day.

hopefully the weather will be great and there will be people to wave at us as we pass through melksham

A man after my own heart!

This tour sounds amazing - and well worth a look seeing as the Salisbury/Eastleigh area is my 'local'! It'd be great to window hang some lines which I know so well, but are now sadly 'sealed units only'...

Depends entirely on who the staff member you encounter is - they could be a semi-enthusiast and have a chat with you, or a rule book hugging.. person who has no understanding of why the HSTs are such a draw for most enthusiasts these days...

I have always aired on the side of caution - as Matt mentions, pulling your head in whenever the door opens is by FAR the best option - just in case!
