Hi all,

Could you give some advice as to how to do the following as cheap as possible? For two adults, one of whom holds a 16-25 railcard.

I want to make a daytrip from Winchester on the 28/7, travel down to the IoW, via Soton Ctl., then from Cowes along to Ryde and come back via Portsmouth. It's looking pricey...

Thanks,

Mark

£12.05 Winchester to Cowes East (or add 50p for Cowes West) - valid after 08:45

Bus from Cowes to Newport and from Newport to Ryde

£13.85 Ryde hoverport to Winchester for the hovercraft to Southsea inc. bus transfer to the Hard (next to Portsmouth Harbour station) or Portsmouth and Southsea.

Or £14.60 from Ryde Pier Head to Winchester on Wightlink to Portsmouth Harbour.

Not much point in splitting or the like I don't think.

Where did you find those fares? I make it £13.10 (£8.65 railcard) for an Anytime Day Single (SDS - no Off Peak Day Singles) to East Cowes and £18.50 (£12.20 rc) for an SDS to West Cowes.

Then, Ryde Hoverport - Winchester SDS £18.00 (£11.90 rc) or,
Ryde Pier Head - Winchester SDS £20.60 (£13.60 rc)

bus straight from east cowes to ryde every 60mins

wintonian cost via redjet + hovertravel : £25.90
wintonian cost via redjet + whightlink : £26.65

my option

Winchester - Fareham £4.95 off peak day return/£5 anytime day return (no mininum fare during july/august)

valid via Southampton Central, break of journey @ Southampton on outward portion, then use your return portion from Fareham.

Southampton Central - Cowes East by redjet funnel ship Anytime Single £5.00 (takes longer than the redjetfoil)

Bus Cowes East - Ryde by bus. don't know how much the single journey price is.

Ryde Esplanade - Fareham £10.70 anytime single via WhightLink catamaran

Total Cost £20.65

please anybody comment if i've made a mistake anywhere.

Forgot about that one, the ferry to East Cowes is every 60 mins and the bus leaves about 25min after the ferry arrives.

If coming from West Cowes it is an uphill walk through town and over the floating bridge, about 20 - 30 mins, not the most practical way IMO better to go through Newport but that will cost an extra ticket.

I have no idea!

In my defence I am suffering from a rather unpleasant case of man flue and am finding it somewhat difficult to think when my head hurts every time I try. :(

But yes you are obviously correct and the Fareham idea is a good one.

Only mistake was not quoting both full and railcard fares. OP did state that one person was with railcard and one without. ;)

If you buy the Winchester to East Cowes and Ryde Hoverport - Winchester Anytime Day Singles, they total £20.55 with a railcard, £31.10 without.

Using the Fareham split the cheapest option is to return using the hovercraft.

Winchester - Fareham £7.50 (£4.95 rc) Off Peak Day Return
Southampton Ctl - East Cowes £7.60 (£5.00 rc) Anytime Day Single
Ryde Hoverport - Fareham £12.60 (£8.30 rc) Anytime Day Single

Total: £27.70 (£18.25 rc)

As has been mentioned before on the forum the ticket office at Southampton Ctl seem reluctant to sell a Southampton - East Cowes ticket, although it is, apparently available from the TVMs!

I wonder if tickets to the island are available from the TVM's at Portsmouth Harbour as apparently you can't by them from the SWT ticket office and have get them from Wightlink.

If the Southampton Central Ticket Office wont sell it, the op could buy it online, or from Winchester Station

As they will have to get tickets at Winchester anyway (unless done online) then yes there is no need to queue twice and it can take a while to get served on plt. 4.

I have a feeling that the buses from West Cowes to Newport are more frequent than those from East Cowes? Once upon a time at least some of the ferries dropped-of and picked-up foot pax from West Cowes but now it's a stiff walk through town and thence via the chain ferry to get to East Cowes and of course vice versa. The buses of course stop within yards of the terminals in both cases.

If time is not of the essence I prefer the West Cowes ferry as it is more of a cruise and they do refreshments on board.

Southern Vectis buses will sell single tickets to any stop on the island whether or not it requires a change of buses, so make sure you get a through ticket if going via Newport. Buses on the Isle of Wight are very expensive though - single fares range from £2.50 to £4.50

For anyone who wants to go from Portsmouth - Ryde/Shanklin for a day trip do not buy your ticket at Portsmouth Harbour/Ferry Terminal.
The prices are
Ryde Esplanade £16-70 return
Shanklin £20-10 return

Stagecoach do a "triplelink ticket" fromany stop in Portsmouth/Souyh Downs area covering bus fare to Portsmouth, Ferry & train to Ryde Esplanade/shanklin for the following
Ryde Esplanade: Adult £14
Shanklin: Adult £17.50

see http://www.stagecoachbus.co.uk/Triplelink.aspx

Important to note though, 'Triplelink' does not allow Railcard discounts.

And can only be bought onboard a Stagecoach bus in Portsmouth or the South Downs, according to the website.

For a pleasant day out on the Island I would suggest riding on the two interesting railways there too. The electric line from Ryde to Shanklin uses “Heritage” 1938 tube stock and the steam railway connects at Smallbrook Junction and goes to Wootton.

To make best use of the time I would recommend reversing the route. Start with Winchester to Ryde; travel to Shanklin and back as far as Smallbrook Junction; transfer to the steam railway where you could do 1 ½ round trips. The steam railway will be running a relatively intensive two train service that day.

http://www.iwsteamrailway.co.uk/timetables-fares.html

Then walk ½ mile from Wootton Station to Wootton High Street to catch the bus to East Cowes. The East (NOT West) Cowes ferry would make a very nice early evening cruise to Southampton for your onward journey home.

The railway sectors have been covered above by others.

For the two railways on the Island there is a combined all day ticket “Island Liner” for £14 (No railcard discounts, sorry) which you can buy from the conductor or a station on either line.

There are a variety of Wightlink offers too:

Enjoy your day.
