This does all beg the question, if Eurostar wants to expand, but a competitor (my money being on Trenitalia) is granted access to Temple Mills before said expansion, what happens to depot space? Eurostar (probably) can’t boot Trenitalia out when they buy new trains. Is there any realistic chance that a second UIC gauge depot gets built?
They could presumably expand Temple Mills across the northern half of the Orient Way site; the stock currently stabled there could be stabled at Aldersbrook instead, which is hardly used at the moment, and by running more 10 cars all day long - the Southend Victoria line certainly needs that capacity.

It can’t be stabled at Aldersbrook, as a) it is too short for 10 car 720s or 745s, and b) the only way in is off the Up Avoider, which means in the morning ECS services have to leave London, to at least Shenfield and probably further, reverse, back to Ilford on the Up Main then avoider, reverse, and then in. By the time they’ve done that, it will be time to come back out again! Alternative Stabling options were looked at extensively for when Orient Way was built, and subsequently again for Crossrail 2.

Also, Orient Way isn’t long enough to build a maintenance facility for 400m trains.

I think Eurostar is planning for the spare capacity at Temple Mills International to be awarded to them, rather than any new competitor. That is likely why we are seeing these announcements now.

There may also be scope to do less stabling and/or maintenance in the UK and more in a location in mainland Europe, like at Brussels or Paris.

Daft question who actually owns Temple Mills depot?
I’m confused at how other operators would be granted access?

Has this now become a race of who gets there first? Would Eurostar have to be the first to apply to ORR in order to secure the remaining Temple Mills capacity? If another operator goes in first (assuming the application is credible), could Eurostar legitimately go 'hang on I've already got plans' without having formalised it?

As I understand it, the site is owned by STPHS, but it is on a very long-time lease to Eurostar International Limited, and Eurostar is frequently referred to as the depot owner.

Earlier in this thread it was posted that Virgin believed the capacity would go to whoever had a formal order for the trains first. If that was correct, then Trenitalia has won as they already have their trains on order.

Does that mean Trenitalia is certain they have enough stock on order for a Chunnel service or do they have options they could exercise?

Eurostar International Limited are the Depot Facility Operator - I.e. EIL are responsible for co-ordinating access to the depot. But yes I think ultimately the freehold rests with SPHS/HS1 Ltd/CTRL whatever they want to be called.

The current process for requesting access and allocating capacity is in the 'Service Facility Descriptions' at the bottom of this page: https://stpancras-highspeed.com/our-company/regulatory/access-operators/

Perfect timing for the new Universal park in Bedford, Universal will obviously be hoping for millions of European visitors to attend the park.

I wonder if this new park has had an impact on this decision? After all to get to the new park from London via train will only be 30 minutes.

Maybe it wasn’t the only reason but they’ll definitely have far more people wanting/needing to make the journey to London from further destinations across Europe.

A depot near Ashford international would probably be considered
Quite difficult to find space near London, but I'm fairly sure there is a strip of land on both sides of the track just south of Ebbsfleet, which would be suitable for servicing sidings (not heavy maintenance) of 400m trains.

There is also an area to west of Singlewell (where there are maintenance sidings) alongside the 4 track section, between HS1 and A2 road

Both have plenty of space, but might be designated as some form of green environment space, so not usable.

Ebbsfleet was meant to be surrounded by a new town centre, shops etc. Since that has inevitably failed to materialise, I don't see an issue with turning it into a glorious new depot.

Jon Worth's article on this is relevant:

OK, I have to face it: I bit off more than I could chew.

When I conducted the research for my #CrossChannelRail Project in March and April this year I thought I would be done with the report from the project by the end of May.

And it is the end of May, and I am far from done.

In my efforts so far it instead feels like I have simply kept on digging up more and more issues that need to be addressed, especially with regard to the trains of the future that might one day run through the Channel Tunnel. My initial aim – to assess all the future trains, operators and stations – hence cannot adequately be accomplished. And as my next major research journey – the #CrossBorderRail finale – starts on 6th June, I am going to have to postpone finalising the full report until some time this autumn.

But there is one thing that will not change: what I discovered in the stations I investigated en route, all 60 of them.

Geneva is undergoing major work anyway. He thinks Frankfurt is doable, Köln cannot be done at the Hbf.

I'm not sure you can do it in 30 minutes.

Can they not access the Up Avoider from the down fast at Forest Gate Junction?

They could certainly put single 720s in Aldersbrook - I have seen them in there occasionally. Several of the ecs moves to and from Orient Way are single 720s; if six of the twelve roads were given over to an expansion of Temple Mills, there would still be six roads available to put 745s and ten car 720s in.

You are correct the roads at present aren't long enough, but from the rear of the existing shed at Temple Mills to the stops at the far end of Orient Way, it is 460 metres - so in theory it is possible, although it would require all the ancilliary buildings at that end of Temple Mills to be relocated.

I suspect the same reasons - rare wildlife - that the housing never materialised at Ebbsfleet might scupper the construction of a new depot there?

I don’t think so, but happy to be corrected. (I think you mean Down electric though). However, even if you can, you won’t be timetabling that move in the morning peak when the ECS is leaving Liverpool St. Crossing Up Main, and both the Down and Up Electric to get to the Up Avoider with more than 30 trains an hour coming the other way isnt going to happen!

by the time you've got the site boundary, building footprint and pointwork in, you won't have 400m left.

There is space if you bought out the Murphy's site behind Orient Way Buffers, and took the outermost stabling siding from TMI as the access lead you could loop around the depot equipment as is and feed a 400m shed there. TMI's existing 8-Road shed is 60m wide, but the 12 roads of Orient way are 50m wide, so you'd be massively disrupting GA for a relatively small gain on Eurostar (at max, it's a net gain of 5 roads because you lose one to feed the new shed). You could obviously tweak that if the new Int'l sidings are stabling not maintenance, but that then has it's own trade offs on the Maintenance activities.

Switzerland is an interesting one I think. The demand is there, going off of the number of flights. The northern Swiss route to Basel and Zurich is relatively feasible as is from an infrastructure view. Going off of Jon Worth’s findings it would be a matter of putting in some fences, passport desks and having some thoughts about where you couple two 200m train sets (if you want to get max value out of your paths on LGVs and HS1 coupling will be necessary given that Basel SBB and Zurich Hbf can only take 200m sets).

Geneva is the funky one as in theory it could be ready in months (or weeks) if you throw some money at Border Force to take some passport desks and officers and plonk them in the entrance to platform 6/7. That platform island is 400m and is used for French trains so can be sealed off for customs checks if the Swiss feel like it (Yes I am simplifying a bit, however I refuse to be pessimistic). However what John Worth correctly picks up is that Geneva Cornavin is scheduled for rebuilding, so maintaining the international capability is in question. I would hope that whoever managed to get the recent memorandum about Swiss-UK trains set up has thought of this and that SBB have quietly agreed that the rebuild will still permit platforms to be sealed for customs and immigration if needed.

Edit: as an addendum, Geneva trains could split/join with another unit at Bourg-en-Bresse to provide seasonal ski trains to Bourg St Maurice

Presumably the Swiss will take a longer term view and keep this capability anyway, just in case they were ever to leave Schengen / the customs union.

I would hope so, of course being in Schengen means that Switzerland no longer imposes passport checks on any neighbours so it would be understandable if they took the view that the capacity was no longer vital. I guess it would depend on how many trains to the UK there would be from Swiss stations, I’d argue that it would take at least 3 daily for a station to warrant passport and security infrastructure, otherwise it would be within reason for Switzerland to go for a Lille shuffle with protected connections (as used to be the case with the Netherlands until the infrastructure was completed).

N.b. Switzerland isn’t in the EU customs Union, but customs checks on inbound individuals are very unusual.

Any expansion of Temple Mills Depot northwards will impact the footbridge over orient way sidings, which is allegedly too low to accommodate European gauge trains. This bridge was subject to a successful local campaign to save it during the initial construction of temple mills depot. The bridge is a vital and much loved (and now very well used) link to the Leyton marshes, but remains unsuitable for wheelchairs or buggies.
So if the depot is to be expanded then campaigners will want Eurostar or whoever funds the expansion to finance a replacement bridge that is fully accessible.

Full history of it all can be found here: http://www.leytonhistorysociety.org.uk/Orient Way Footbridge - A Historical Overview AF1 revised version.pdf

I don't know that Basel would justify more than 1 train per day, going on flights - Zurich would of course but it is at the reaches of too far.

Geneva is a different route (and nowhere of note en route - if even a call in France was decided) - after Dijon, if the Basel/Zurich service went that way. Maybe a split with a Bern section (very fragmented flight-wise, to London) - which does have a station that could do this - makes this more interesting.

I do think these services can be somewhat cushioned by calling at Disney again.

Indeed, Marne-la-Vallée would seem to be the obvious point at which to combine Basel and Geneva portions.

Marne-la-Vallée is south of the LGV Est junction (assuming you are going to run the Basel portion via Strasbourg) - so would have to be Charles de Gaulle.

I reckon the competitor will get there first and take the spare capacity in Temple Mills, but if there is need for an additional depot, why not somewhere close to the northern end of the HS1 Channel crossing in Thurrock?

It's a deprived area with a reasonable amount of disused industrial land in Tilbury that could be used for businesses relocated away from a depot site. It's also closeish to Ebbsfleet for any operator who wanted to use that station for services to the continent.

Thurrock is the wrong side of the tunnel mouth you would have issues with the marshes on the western side. Dagenham is more of a possibility.

I wasn't thinking about Rainham Marshes, more the area around Oliver Close/Burnley Road on the western edge of Grays.

Dagenham is also another fair shout - is there any spare land there that isn't housing?

Apologies If I've missed it upthread, but do Eurostar plan to increase their fleet if they are successful with new routes and services? If so, will this be a brand new independent design, or the new TGV-M fleet???
