Due to Northerns short notice change to the timetable for tomorrow Train Spilt is going me an off peak day return for Stockport to Kidsgrove but on the return the trains it is giving me the 18:23 to Stoke to chace an Avante service to Manchester. Is it permitted to double back through Kidsgrove non stop.

You are always entitled to follow the itinerary you select when buying your ticket. Your ticket is contractually valid on those trains.

That being said, it looks like TrainSplit is offering a combination of tickets splitting at Stoke (at a much higher cost) - so this isn't a through fare.

The only valid route according to the routeing guide is direct via Cheadle Hulme, but if you're sold the CDR for £14.80 against an itinerary of doubling-back through Stoke then you are allowed to follow it.

Do you have a link or a screenshot?

I don't, however I think I will stick booking a Rishton to Kidsgrove return as there is not much difference in price and gives me the flexibility to go via Manchester or Crewe.

I believe this is what they were referring to?

I can't tell you for certain how it's validating it, but it is also shown as permitted using NRE:

Ah, I can now. Easement 030126:

On Saturday and Sundays only, journeys from Kidsgrove via Macclesfield may travel via Stoke on Trent. This easement applies in both directions.

Well found, makes sense, I followed a link to easements but it didn’t come up with this one, next time I’ll go back to looking at the full pdf file.
I think this is one of the only times where setting the date of travel correctly in the RP calculator has made a difference! :D

We're getting somewhat off-topic now, but I thought details of easements ended up in the fare notes?
I think it might depend what type of easement applies? Map easements seem to always appear on the site, but I don't think I've seen a RP easement before.

Mmmm, suspect you're right.

It is useful when it occasionally works!

Weird that it is not valid to go from Kidsgrove to Stockport via Stoke or Crewe. I've taken the Kidsgrove to Manchester route several times via Crewe/Stoke, and the train conductor has scanned my tickets without issue.

This happened on both weekdays and weekends.

Most conductors don’t have an encylopaedic knowledge of the routeing guide, and tend to implement a “reasonable route” approach which can often work in your favour, however sometimes means that they try to insist that a strange but valid route isn’t valid.

I doubt many of them know about the weekend positive easement, for example.

I can't comment on the specific journey the subject of the thread but, before the Northern hourly all day Stoke to Manchester service started, doubling back was permitted. I assumed due to the lack of trains between Kidsgrove and Manchester. I also think Alsager had the same easement.
