Dear All,
I'll be travelling from Amsterdam to Delft but would like to stop off in The Hague en route.
I'll be booking my tickets via the 9292 app.
Is it possible to break my journey like this if I go off into the Hague for a few hours then resume my journey to Delft. I don't want to incur any penalties or extra costs?
Any help in the matter will be gratefully received.
Thank you

Is there a particular reason for buying a ticket that way?

NS doesn't really have the concept of 'break of journey', if you want to do that you'll need two separate tickets.

The easiest way to do that is by tapping in/out (inchecken/uitchecken) with your phone, contactless payment card or an OV Chipkaart.

With an E-ticket breaking your journey is possible, however there is a limit on how often you are allowed to pass through gates with the QR code. And be aware that your journey always needs to be one being advised by the journey planner. So exiting at Den Haag HS will not be a problem, but not sure if you're technically allowed to go via Centraal.

That is more expensive however as you'll lose the long distance discount when breaking your journey with a stopover of more than 35 minutes.

It depends on the ticket. With a single journey ticket you are allowed to break the journey, as long as the station is along the route. That does mean you have to get off at Den Haag HS station rather than Centraal as the latter is not along the route from Amsterdam to Delft. With an advance ticket (called 'PrijsTijd Deal') there is no mention of breaking the journey though in the terms.

To make it perhaps even more complicated-and as I at this mo in fact sit in an overly full (its a holiday here today) too short train from HS: there is also tram nr 1 by HTM-stops very near HS, to Delft-along the ´Vliet=former waterway for the boats before trains came that passes closer by centre of Delft-though it may still be partly bus-stituted part of the final end.
Unless you can score that ´prijstijddeal´=a looser kind of advance-not tied to 1 train, but to a short time-window, there is not any advantage booking tix before (all NON-refund.) vs just tap in+out by bank/creditcard. IF the break is less as 35 mins, it will be considered as ´overstap=change´ if longer a for the system new trip starts.
IF you happen to be senior >65 and If you are willing to do the notifications with ID etc, on OV-pay, you can score a 33% discount for BusTram-but NOT for trains by using that card for direct payment.

Interesting tram route that - starting off in the Den Haag tram system, then running interurban style towards Delft and eventually entering the Delft tram network.

Tram 1 is partially suspended until mid July, most of the part along the canal is skipped (the replacement bus has a circular route, only going along the canal in one direction).

And if you've reached that secret limit, then you simply ask the staff or press the 'i' button on the information pole, since there is no limit in the conditions.

As far as I know, that 'secret' limit is 6 times. So you should be able to break your journey twice without issues. And yes, after that, just press the information button and ask them to open the barriers.

Thank you all so much for your contributions and suggestions. I really think OV-pay with a credit card is the way to go. That way I can split the journey, go straight to Hague central then onto Delft from there. Or I can simply do the same with the app with single tickets. I'll have two technophobes travelling with me which is why I originally wanted to book via the app. I think actually I'll do this as using a credit card to tap in out will probably freak them out. Thank you again everybody!!

Following the instructions here:

you don't seem to need proof that you are entitled to the discount. Anybody could lie about their date of birth.

Understandable, though it's the most reassuring system using contactless charging I've come across. The app shows you when you've tapped in and out, and you get nice clear messages on the barriers or validator when you tap. In particular, if you tap in and then back through station barriers, the barrier display makes it very clear that the tap-in has been cancelled.

The ticket inspector is able to see the uploaded photo and when in doubt he is able to see date of birth and name as well. So you may need to prove your age then by showing your passport or ID.

If you're paying full fare, and you're breaking your journey, then an e-ticket will be cheaper since then you don't loose the degressive fare. If you tap in and out, you're effectively buying 2 tickets in a row, which is always going to be more expensive than one ticket for the whole journey.

For a relative short journey between Amsterdam and Delft the difference is small though, in this case it's only €1.20 more though when you break your journey at Den Haag Centraal. On a long trip between Den Helder and Vlissingen it will cost you €20.40 though to break your journey at Den Haag Centraal as the long distance discount only really starts affect prices after 100 kilometres and after about 200 kilometres the price is capped entirely.
