Is it possible to book a 7-day Standard Class return journey from Prestbury to Sandown (IOW) that will include the cost of the hovercraft journey across the Solent and if so, what will be the best route that will be offered from Prestbury and the total ticket cost. I can book the ticket at Macclesfield booking office if required.

EDIT : I mean that my wife will be travelling on a Monday and returning on a Saturday (to visit a sick relative).....I meant a Period Return ticket to cover that period of travel and she has a Senior Citizen railcard.

I assume by "7 day return" you mean returning within 7 days i.e. a period return, rather than a weekly season - I can't imagine anyone commuting that distance for a week!

I believe that if you want hovercraft travel included you have to book to Ryde Hoverport; through tickets to stations on the Isle of Wight only allow travel on the catamaran service between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head. So to travel by hovercraft you'd need Prestbury - Ryde Hoverport and Ryde Esplanade - Sandown tickets.

I could be wrong though.

Some through tickets are available on Red Funnel Ferries wherever they go from...

Wight Link's catamarans are far more convenient being just 5 minutes walk from the train at Portsmouth Harbour. The hovercraft goes from Southsea which is a bus ride away so, while faster on the water, actually takes longer than the catamaran from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde.
Also, arriving at Pier Head gets you straight on the train to Sandown whereas there's a short walk from Ryde hovercraft terminal to Ryde Esplanade.

If it is of any help, my wife says that she will accept any crossing of the Solent provided it is included in the return ticket fare.

All she wants is an all-in-one return ticket to cover the outward travel on Monday and the return ticket on Saturday....and its cost...if such a ticket exists.

From Avantix NFM09:

PRESTBURY (PRB) to SANDOWN (SAN)
with Senior Railcard

SVR - OFF-PEAK R VWC
00200 - +LONDON
1 Adult @£ 80.35 = £ 80.35

That must be valid on the catamarans from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head.

Any train Prestbury-Macclesfield
Any train Macclesfield-London (due to being Railcard discounted)
Cross-London transfer included
Any train London-Portsmouth (due to the destination being within the Network Area)
Catarmaran transfer included
Any train Ryde Pier Head-Sandown

(and vice-versa)

Return within 1 month (A 7 day return does not exist)

Note: Restrictions would apply between Macclesfield & London if a Railcard was not held.

Somewhat moot now but feel like pointing out that the bus trip to Southsea hoverport is included in the ticket price. Ryde hoverport is next to Ryde Esplanade and the bus station. You also need to go to the ticket office and get a ferry ticket issued – only Hovertravel require this.

Not quite, it is valid on the catamarans from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head. If the catamaran reaches Ryde Esplanade you've got problems! The hovercrafts park on a hard close to Ryde Esplanade station, whereas the catamarans dock at the end of the pier.

Thank you, on behalf of my wife, for this information.

She is going to book the ticket at Macclesfield station today, armed with all your information, as she will be travelling next Monday.

If it's still the case as I recall, access to Esplanade station and the buses from the hoverport requires crossing a footbridge unless you walk around the roadway.

Yes it is and I didn't know you could walk round.

The OP could of saved £5.15 if had split at the Hoverport, and walked from the Hoverport to Esplanade

prestbury - ryde hoverport SVR £72.00

2 x Anytime Singles £1.60 Ryde Esplnade to Sandown IOW

total cost £75.20 with Senior Railcard Discount

in most cases the fare to the hoverport is cheaper than to the esplanade, but the only problem the direct ticket from prestbury to sandown IOW is routed via the whightlink catamaran

I assume it’s priced this way as it’s not quite as convenient although it does make for a rather fun trip if you have a bit of extra time.

The roadway that gives access to the hoverport is I think called Quay Road which leads into The Pavillion and that in turns connects to the Esplanade.

That would make sense if I'm where I think you are. ;)

One thing to note when travelling to the Isle of Wight, although it only applies to more local fares, is that buying a return from the Isle of Wight is usually a few pounds cheaper than buying a return to the Isle of Wight as islanders get cheaper ferry fares.

An example (NFM08 fares as I don't have the latest version):

Ashurst NF - Sandown is £29.80 CDR, Sandown - Ashurst NF is £24.70 CDR.
Brighton - Sandown is £33.00 CDR, Sandown - Brighton is £29.80 CDR.

The same applies to ferry fares...islanders get cheaper seasons. There have been instances of mainlanders trying to use them but that the companies have been wise to it.

We tend to go Yarmouth via Lymington and now I am wondering what the fares are by train from Ashurst NF to Yarmouth?

Yarmouth to Lymington - is it still the most expensive ferry per mile in Europe?
