Why is it when evryone applies for a vacancies, You then do all the leg work and then all of a sudden the vacancies come back. SORRY THE VACANCY IS WITHDRAWN. Its soo annoying WHY?

Only good thing out of mine is i dont need to do the DSI Testing again Woop.

It is pathetic and as I have said before they should not be allowed to do that.

It is sometimes the case that vaccancies are advertised based on predicted future growth or predicted future staffing levels. If these predictions to come to anything then there is no choice but to remove the vaccany.

When I first applied to GBRF a number of years ago I got passed the medical stage only to find they didn't win the contracts they were advertising the vaccancy, for so there was no job for me to have.

It is frustrating but these things happen.

There's a very high proportion of jobs withdrawn, and they should explain the reason behind it better.

If it's about predicting, they wouldn't do very well on the Grand National

Always seems to be jobs like train driver, conductor and RPA that get withdrawn.

Sometimes it does raise the question. Whats the point applying if there going to withdraw it afterwards?

That RPA job at Newcastle i applied for back in April, did the DSI test and passed and then didnt get to the interview stage. No idea if that job got withdrawn afterwards.

I applied for that TPO job at Heaton. The job closes tomorrow and I hope they don't withdraw it.

I would actually rather like to get some feedback! It seems to be very tricky though to get in touch with people within Northern.

My company in the private sector before I got made redundant used to do this. I am sure somewhere it states they have to recruit externally, but theres no guarentee they will take external applicants on!

They only have to advertise a certain amount of jobs externally as they get money from the government for training etc. However I am sure the prefer internal for one simple reason, they already know the majority of what they need from that employees record.

Tis shameful.

Unlike Northern, at least Merseyrail are honest, inviting all to their recruitment day, giving all a fair chance, not just hacking out the external applicants who often have a better sick and attendance record and more importantly - an ability to actually do the job.

I'm no personnel man but I'm sure there are some regulations that state most positions must be advertised externally even when it's the employers intention to promote within. If that is indeed the case then all external applications will not even get looked at hence the lack of feedback.

A victim of what exactly?

They can advertise externally all they want. Sometimes an internal applicant will fit the bill better, so they'll take them instead. What's the problem?

It happened with me when I was 22 - TfL were recruiting Drivers on the Tube and advertised externally, but they withdrew the job as they had filled the available posts from within.

If you dislike them so much, just don't apply.

Time is money, and the effort put in by many, often hours into their applications only to be told there wasn't a job there in the first place is downright unfair - no-one should fail to see that.

All of them really want to work on the railway, it's just unfortunate most of the franchises fail to recognise the grief that this kind of time wasting causes, especially for those out of work.

Simple way of doing it would be to advertise internally, then if there are still some vacancies, then advertise externally. At the minute it seems Northern are paying someone to update their vacancies then taking them down again, which is surely wasting money in the HR department.

I've had similar problems when trying to get a work experience placement over the summer.

I emailed someone in Hampshire County Council's recruitment department to get a work experience placement with Transport for South Hampshire (read all about them here), having made an effort to find the person responsible for co-ordinating work experience placements as opposed to merely emailing their HR department and hoping for the best! My email was forwarded to someone else, and I duly received a reply a couple of weeks later asking for how long I wanted the placement. I replied to that email, didn't get a reply for a week, so I emailed them again and was told the placement had been withdrawn!

If I rememeber correctly someone on this forum took the train driver assessment and passed but then the train driver job was withdrawn? Passing the assessment did not even count. I am sure a member said something along these lines
