Thank you everyone for your advice. I just wanted to update as I had the reply from the appeal - they agreed to reduce it to only £8.80 (the amount they said the railcard discounted the ticket by). I have still overpaid for one ticket but I'm very relieved to have the big bull overturned and have paid this small amount.

This is good news. Yes, they have still charged you more than you might otherwise have paid, but at least some benefit to you. It's pleasing that the advice here to give it a try has ended up working rather than the advice which I think you got on reddit was that you would just have to pay this in full.

It's helpful to know this because other people may be able to benefit from the knowledge in future.
