I was travelling on a GWR train from Newbury to London Paddington (direct) on May 11th. I presented my off peak day return ticket, Newbury to London Terminals via any permitted route purchased on the Trainline app the morning of. Unfortunately, when asked to present my 16-25 railcard, I realised it had expired on the 10th April. The ticket inspector took evidence of my ticket, railcard, Trainline purchase history and ID. He then interviewed me. Previously, there had been one other journey in which I had travelled with the expired railcard (May 9th). I immediately purchased another 16-25 railcard. I am just wondering what the outcome of this is likely to be.

Welcome to the Forum you never wanted to join. The most likely outcome is an out of court settlement, so long as you engage positively with GWR. When you get the letter or email, reach out here for further advice. GWR is one of the best companies to deal with, fortunately. There may be a hefty replacement ticket charge for the missed fare or fares (though GWR tends to give credit for sums spent) and an administration charge, which could be £100 or so. Again they tend to be more reasonable in this area but you should budget for this.

Whilst waiting to hear from them it might be a good idea for you to read this

if you have any questions people will no doubt be able to answer them here

Keep all tickets, find proof of past Railcard purchase / expiry etc if you have it - along with of course the new railcard you have bought as you can use this to show that you acted to prevent the problem happening again as this was a genuine oversight, not a deliberate intention to evade paying the correct fare (presumably)
