I know, I shouldn’t be surprised about people completely missing the point when responding to an online forum.

The point I was making about “kettle” wasn’t about either deference or offence, but that it’s utterly childish - as are “duff”, “spoon” and all the other baby-talk names. It just confirms the stereotype of railway enthusiasts as socially inadequate. Yes, fighting a losing battle, I know…

It’s just a nickname. Should people always say ‘steam locomotive’ to avoid being ‘childish’? Really no need for anyone to get their knickers in a twist about it.

So I guess car enthusiasts, aka "petrol heads", are confirming their stereotype as socially inadequate when they refer to a Beamer, Scooby or Evo?

some hardcore mincepie action annouced at Wensleydale:

Black Five kettle steam locomotive 45212 will be operating two-days of steam services between Leeming Bar and Leyburn on 28 and 29 December 2024. Brush type 4/duff/Spoon Class 47 diesel/electric locomotive 47714 will operate on 30th December.

You have a choice of three trips per day to choose from and can depart from Leeming Bar, Bedale or Leyburn stations (with a request stop at Finghall station).

Leeming Bar departures: 10:00, 12:20 and 14:40

Bedale departures: 10:10, 12:30 and 14:50

Leyburn departures: 11:20, 13:40 and 16:00

All tickets are Rovers priced at £25 for adult so you can travel on any service from any station on the day AND you get a free mincepie!

45212 chuffed well and there was even some bonus 47 haulage at Leeming when the black 5 was shunted off to drop onto the back of the train. Decent mince pie to!

Black 5 was an engineman's nickname to distinguish them from a Red 5 (5XP later 6P) Stanier Jubilee.

I encountered it a few times when it was doing the Polar Express (I live about 200 yards from the WR now) and it always sounded in fine fettle. But yes, it needs a lick of paint

As a fan of Duffs, it's a term of endearment to me, I'm kinda hoping they take 47714 back to Banger Blue, black dominoes and take it back to 47511. You've got InterCity(LSL), ScotRail, Railfreight Grey, and old BR Green versions on preserved lines. Just my thoughts but at the end of the day I'm not the one painting it. Maybe nostalgia is clouding my vision.

one old school 47 basher used to say' They are all the same'. As long as it sounds how it should. Obviously people have their favourite liveries.

Very true, I'm not a big fan of the Weathered Anglia livery. However if it saved the loco, then that's the top n bottom. The owners are allowed to put it in whatever livery takes their fancy. Like I said maybe I'm letting nostalgia cloud my vision.

47714 has emerged in RES livery and looks very good. It’s nice to see something painted in RES as I’’m sure every major station contained a RES 47 in the early 00’s

Seen a couple of photos of 47714 on facebook, it looks really good, well done to the paint team, just need the proper size numbers on it and removal of the multi socket and it will be just like being back in the 90s

Had the pleasure of riding behind 47714, at the Wensleydale diesel day. 47714 looks and sounds amazing. Well it is if you like that type of thing. In fact 37250, (what a machine that is too) and 33035 seemed as if they were in very good working order.
A guy showing sone of us photos and tales of the 47s restoration was very interesting too. A great day out. Fully recommend the carrot cake at Leyburn Station too.
