Hi,

I would like to know if start dates for trainee drivers can be postponed and if so, by how many weeks or months please

So, if I were to successfully complete all the recruitment stages and they offered me a start date, can I push the start date back by 6 months? (Southeastern)

You can ask, but there is no guarantee there will be another course in 6 months to put you on.

You’d need to ask them directly. As @greatkingrat has mentioned, there’s no guarantee of a course in six months, they may have a business need to fill the vacancy sooner too.

You can ask directly. But I would say it is unlikely - courses run in bulk with several trainees at a time and are scheduled with trainer / assessor availability in mind. There are also several other candidates who are in the same boat as you but would jump at the opportunity to start when requested so you might be bumped to the back of the queue or, worse, removed from consideration completely.

I would not mind waiting another 6 months. Is there a talent pool they can just add me into?
Why would you want to postpone? Also a lot of people get put in a talent pool and essentially never hear from the company again. If you are offered a start date the best advice is to take it, and even then there have been times when courses have been cancelled last minute!

They could but again there is absolutely no guarantee. This is a huge risk to take if you get to stage; they might just say "thanks, but no thanks"

This is not unheard of but you would have to speak with the company to see what future start dates they have, it’s not necessarily a regular frequency so it’s hard for us to advise how often they have a course. If you do so, ideally you would like to confirm with them which course they’ll be putting you on with a firm start date rather than just putting you back in the pool again with no guarantee of ever getting a job. They should have the next few courses planned so see if you can get on any of the confirmed course dates (maybe they’ll switch you around with someone from a later course date). This would be easier if you’re internal. Good luck.

Hi,

As I have been told after my DMI - I can choose date of start of my courses but there were only two options and both within one month(August). Then I need to be available for duration of training so cannot book any holidays or days off.
