As indicated above it has failed just short of Harthope viaduct at 20.00 ( according to Tracksy) 1S81 and 82 very close behind. I'm no expert on this, but how would it be rescued?. Looking at Tracksy, if the Thunderbird at Carlisle was used it would have go along the up line from Lockerbie to Beattock Summit... Looks like a long night ahead for many passengers on Avanti and TPE.

I am not on any of the trains - I noted it on Tracksy.

Route(s) affected

Avanti West Coast between London Euston and Edinburgh, and between Crewe and Glasgow Central

TransPennine Express between Manchester Airport and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh, between Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh

Description

A fault on a train at Lockerbie means the lines towards Glasgow Central / Edinburgh are blocked.

Trains running between Carlisle and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer advice

Avanti West Coast

To assist you with your journey your ticket will be accepted on TransPennine Express services between Preston and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh at no extra cost.

TransPennine Express

The following routes are affected:

  • Manchester Airport / Piccadilly - Glasgow Central / Edinburgh on North bound services only are unable to run
  • Trains booked to run through to Edinburgh may be diverted into Glasgow Central when services are able to run. Road Transport will be provided for customers from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh

You may use your ticket on Avanti West Coast services at no extra cost when disruption ends and services are able to operate.

Rail replacement transport has been requested to run between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh when services are able to operate. Journey times may be extended by 90 minutes whilst travelling by rail replacement transport
Looks like there's no acceptance on the East Coast (although don't TPE give validity on Northern/LNER when there's disruption by default).
Given the time of the incident says "Incident reported: 29 Apr 2025 at 18:37" and it has now been significantly more than 90 minutes I can't imagine the passengers are happy.

A minimum of 7 passenger trains waiting to pass through. 3 in the Beattock area, 1 at Lockerbie and 3 held at Carlisle. Good luck to them getting through the area soon.

Anyone know why they can't run wrong road here? Guessing there will be good reason, but just wondering what it is really

*EDIT referring to the ones held at Carlisle and Lockerbie

The railway really doesn't come off looking good with such incidents (whether that is or isn't justified, or whatever the rights or wrongs; the public just don't consider such incredibly lengthy delays as this as remotely acceptable)

Correct, it's automatic (whether LNER like it or not; they have to lump it)

That's the current plan but I believe it takes multiple people on site to activate it. Things like level crossings aren't set up for wrong road working so it needs manual intervention on site.

(I'm not sure if there are any LCs in this area but that's just one example).

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Two of them are stuck right behind the failed train, there's no points for them to get around.
I guess they will reverse to Beattock when safe to do so and the staff are on site to support it?

Looks like 9S85 has just started to go around wrong way!

It has gone straight from the box at Beattock to the box at Beattock Summit, meaning 1 train can only fit in the 10 miles section.
Traksy screenshot showing 9S85 past the broken down train.

For such a critical section of track, SimBids would be a minimum insurance policy....

[Edit]: Full Bi-di would make more sense to reduce disruption, but we know how loathe we are to invest in resiliency...

I just glanced at things as I am travelling south tomorrow on TP to Manchester. OR AM I?

How can an electric locomotive run out of fuel? Oh that's right they scrapped them all.

The failed freight train had problems earlier at Carlisle and Beattock is notorious for failing freights so why on earth did NR route it ahead of all the cross border passenger trains

This suggestion often comes up when we have incidents of failed trains on the two track railway sections north of Preston - feel free to start a new thread in our Speculative Ideas section. :)

It left Beattock following an incredibly late 1S74 1612 Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central.
It didn't get sent right ahead of them, it got sent right behind one, with the next passenger train 9 minutes behind.

Looks like it's been sent back to Beattock to make their way wrong road up to Glasgow.

*EDIT* Now made it to Beattock Summit as of 0040.

Geordie back from exile.
1Z99 now on site it seems and things moving on the up (01:30) that were stuck behind 1Z99. Presumably they'll drag the failed train to Beattock loop to clear the backlog?
1S83, 1S90 still stuck behind the failed train.

Edit: 1S81 made it to Glasgow 312L.

Per Traksy, there are freights at Quintinshill and Kingmoor plus two passenger trains at Carlisle still waiting to head north. The failed train doesn’t appear to have moved yet…..
