Hi, I have got an interview for TPE conductor and was wondering if anyone had any recent insight into the sort of interview and what the questions will be like? I have passed the OPC tests and now have interviews with the customer service managers.
Can’t help you with any insight unfortunately as I’m still waiting for my interview, which depot you go for?

Has anyone applying for TPE Conductor jobs recently had any feedback on the new online interview style questions?

I submitted my answers around a fortnight ago and haven't heard back so I'm assuming I haven't passed this time.

If you’re referring to the situational judgment ones where you choose what is most and least appropriate, you should have had an automated email following that advising if you passed or failed. The pass email would then advise that only the highest scorers proceed to the next stage which is the five OPC tests.

I did this just over a month ago and that’s my experience of it.

I think the system has recently changed, as I did the tests you describe (which were the same as the GWR style ones) a few months ago but they appear to have changed it very recently- they confirmed they couldn't honour my pass of the original test owing to the change of test format.

No news is good news, I didn’t get anything in terms of a reply about my assessment, I emailed them to which they confirmed I’d passed & just awaiting interview dates to be confirmed. Might be worth emailing them too see what they say?

Thank you- I've taken your suggestion and emailed them. I noticed that the automated acknowledgement email I got when I submitted my answers said they'd be in touch if I was successful- whereas before they used to let you know regardless of whether it was good or bad news.

Hopefully they give you good news back. Yeah for some reason they don’t seem to reply and let you know the outcome etc which is frustrating, it’s a long process as it is without them not letting you know.

I did get good news at that stage, but sadly failed the concentration test again.

Good luck. Which depot have you applied for? I've not been to a TPE Conductor interview before.

Hi all,

What are people’s experience on the outcome of interview? I’ve seen a few that wait weeks and still get bad news? Is the longer it goes not in your favour so to speak? Do they not let the unsuccessful ones know pretty much straight away?

TPE have their quirks with recruitment.

I was offered Conductor with them back at the start of the year. But that offered was a couple of weeks later and I was put in the talent pool.

Congratulations. So will people who get unsuccessful emails get them at the same time as successful ones are sent?

I was hoping someone may be able to give me a rough idea of a sample rota showing times for York or other stations in Yorkshire for TP Express as I am thinking about potentially applying. From looking around a little it seems like you work two out of three Saturdays and compulsory Sunday overtime every so often? Then shifts are just really random but it would be nice to see a rota if some one happens to have one please.

It seems like the job could have quite a bit of confrontation in it with difficult passengers and fare evaders. However I was hoping some one could give me some insight in to what else the role involves although I have had a good browse of the forum for ideas it's always nice to hear from others. I work in a role currently where there is quite a lot of confrontation so its something I am pretty accustomed too. Thanks

TPE (conductors) at York is two links, no difference between them

3 weeks of earlies, long weekend, 3 weeks of lates, long weekend, repeat

Rest day pattern is
W1 Mon/Tue
W2 Wed/Thu
W3 Fri/Sat
then back to W1

Compulsory Sunday is 1 in 3, either end of W1 or W2 depending on where you are in the link.

Swaps are possible and there's a few people who will take your lates/earlies off you if you prefer the other

Earliest start 0348 Monday Only, 0400 Tu-Sa, roughly 0630 SuO. Start times on earlies range from 0348 - 1101, with most between 0500 and 0630.
Latest job is 2315 - 0515, there are 2 "proper" night shifts (0330 and 0515 finishes) as well as an overnight spare (1930 - 0425). Start times on lates range from 1101 - 2315. Most between 1400 and 1600.

Everyone signs 185 and 802s at York, as well as Newcastle/Saltburn/Scarborough through to Liverpool/Manchester Airport as well as all diversions.
On 185s you have full responsibility for doors, on 802 it's Driver Open, Guard Close.

Most jobs are either Redcar + Castleford stopper OR Manchester Vic, back to Leeds, then Liverpool or v.v.

Fare evasion is worst on the Redcar branch, but the stoppers via Castleford can be just as bad. Confrontation is no worse than any other public facing role on the railway.

It's a decent depot in terms of people, starts and finishes are quite extreme but that's just how it is. If you live Scarborough side of York then that has less extreme starts/finishes but not many openings and they tend to get filled internally. Same for Hull if you live that way.

If you want any more info feel free to PM me. Won't share a full rota as it has names on etc but can give more details :)

Thanks for this. It's clear you work more Sundays than I though as I did see some one elsewhere mention it was about 1 in 6 but I guess at least it bumps the salary up to more than advertised. How much annual leave do you guys receive? I read somewhere that it is automatically picked for you with no choices also, is this correct?

Should I decide to apply at some point I will be sure to message you if I need any further information regarding it so I really appreciate that. Thanks

A/L is 5 weeks which are allocated but mutually swappable and there’s a few spare weeks you can swap into every year.

This is topped up with 10 floating days to take as you wish, within the depot leave quota per day

Hi guys! just wondering if anyone can tell me what I will need to expect when I do the OPC testing. Maths is probably my weakest point - what types of questions will I need to anticipate/revise for. Appreciate the help! :)

Has anyone recently or maybe even currently gone through recruitment process for a trainee conductor role at TPE?

Just wondering if anyone has any insight into what the 3 hour teams interview/tests looks like and what happens if you pass that.

Just recently been invited by TPE to do the second phase of tests (5 tests I think) is this done at home or are you asked to go to a testing location. Any tips or pointers would be massively appreciated. Also in anyone’s experience how long did it take to get through the whole test period to then getting a job offer if successful..?
Thanks in advance for any advice or tips

My second stage tests with OPC was this morning for a TPE conductor role. It was on teams at home, so needed webcam and microphone on for the duration. It took roughly 2 hours for the 3 tests we had to do, but we had 2 people not join and then a couple of people had wifi issues before it started.

The SCAAT & RAAT ones were ok, but the TCT one is where I think I fell down.

I've not found out what happens next if I'm successful either.

Sat mine yesterday as well. Same as you felt ok with the first two but the TCT threw me. Was unsure whether to/from on the ticket would count as two errors or one?

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one. I went with 2 errors as both are wrong.

I guess only time will tell.

Cheers for the heads up how long did it take from receiving the email to getting a test date through from The OPC. I’ve been waiting nearly 2 weeks now for a date.

Hopefully you were successful with all 3 tests

Keep us posted

Have you done the first set of tests with the OPC? (Customer Service and Maths). I did those then got an email about two weeks later with a time and instructions for the second set done via Teams. Think it was about three/four weeks notice of the date but you could ask them to rearrange if needed.
