158840 failed on 30th June on a1730 Aberystwyth to Birmingham run, fitters dumped in the sidings at Newtown to be towed to Mach.
Passengers not to impressed, I am told.

158840 is the newly restored 158 with a logo everywhere.

I don't suppose they'd be too impressed if an unrefurbished unit broke down either! Having been crammed into a 2 coach 158 on the Holyhead - Birmingham Int service a few weeks ago, it was the most unpleasant travelling experience I've had a on a train in a long time. To think this service used to be LHCS with 4 coaches, this isn't exactly progress when usage of the railway is increasing.

Arriva Fails Wales...
Arriva CrapClumsy...

Only decent operator they ever ran was Arriva Trains Northern, primarily because the management were inherited from a senible operator, RRNE ;)

From a passengers point of view, like hell they did, as they inherited all the same troubles that Northern Spirit had (that lay between Regional Railways and Arriva), but succeeded in making the operation even more corporate and faceless. I was sad to see Northern Spirit go, and glad to see the back of Arriva when they were replaced by Northern.

i cant wait til the wales franchise comes up for re-newal. can we have it being re-nationalised please by the WAG?

Sadly i doubt that will happen.

They should make whoever winds the new franchise invest in new rolling stock if they get a long enough franchise. maybe new class 172's

Both Labour and Plaid had, in their Assembly manifesto, plans to possibly put a not-for-profit company in charge of the Wales franchise. I heard somthing about the Scotish Parlement considering trying out vertical integration with ScotRail. It's a shame neither devolved administration's can actually do anything that isn't half-hearted regarding nationalisation because the main Westminister parties (Labour too apparently, not just the Tories) are so convinced that the railways should remain privatised.

I had my first trip on a refurbed 158 yesterday (from Holyhead to Shrewsbury), and I wasn't too impresed. The power points are a big plus but the only other improvements are the carpet on the floor and the appearance of the seats. The seats themselves are too hard though, and the horrid Arriva turquoise on the armrests and several other places is, well, horrid. The smart blue carpet on the walls beneath the windows has sadly not been replaced (I noticed it was getting very tatty on the unrefurbished sets though) and the blue strips on the edge of the luggage racks and above the windows where a nice feature that is sadly no more. I think they needed to concentrate more on reliability mods than Arriva-ising the appearance of the interior design. The external livery though is a huge improvement over the standard Arriva scheme, I heard some boarding passengers who sounded impressed with the train, not sure if it was the interior or the exterior they were commenting on though.

I had quite a wait for the unit (838 I seem to remember) at Holyhead as it was late arriving (not sure why) alone (the other 158s we passed seemed to be mostly 4-car). At Shrewsbury there was an anouncement saying the inbound service from Aberystwyth had been canceled due to a train failure. I expected the service from Birmingham (4-car) to Aberystwyth which I then boarded would sit there in Shrewsbury for ages until they had somehow managed to get the broken unit off the single track. I was wrong, we got to Newtown before being held-up, where we eventually passed a 4-car set (advertised on the information display as being delayed by getting on for 2-hours due to a train failure). We weren't held there to allow the following eastbound train to pass too, but to my supprise we got to Talgarig before it and had to wait there, strangly it was a single 158. A further oddity I thought was that all 4 coaches of our train continued to Aberystwyth (I knew this was the one without a Pwllheli portion, but thought 1 set would be dropped at the depot at Machynlleth). On arrival in Aber-Y at about 19:40 (possibly a bit earlier) though there was a large number of passengers waiting and some British Transport Police presence, so perhaps there was some event on that explained the 4 coaches.

Get a grip FFS. Its still a 20 year old train that is hammered for 20 hours+ per day. Components fail. Fact.

Currently top of the PPM figures again I believe.

Parts of the Wales & Borders franchise only run trains in England, so a WAG take over will not happen, unless the franchise is broken up.

The seats themselves are too hard

All new seats are firm these days. I think it is so they are vandal resistant, fire resistant and purported to be more supportive of the back but cost may have something to do with it!

Incorrect. They are actually brand new seats. There are also new and much improved lights internally, completely refitted and refurbed toilets, totally refitted and refurbed bike stowage which opens up the gangway between cars, passenger information system which admittedly is not yet fully functional but nonetheless is hard to miss plus revised luggage stowage racks. Practically the whole interior of the saloon (sadly excepting the air con) is ripped out and replaced! Were you asleep for your journey?!

What! The air-con was probablly the aspect most in need of replacment, especially if they haven't fixed the issue with the windows mostly refusing to open (I had a rather hot unrefurbished unit on the way up, and the guard tried and failed to open most of the windows).

I know they are new seats, they are a completly different shape. It's just apart from their appearence I don't think they are better than the old ones (the colours and patterns of the previous seat covers didn't work well in my opinion, but the old seats were marginly more comfortable).

I did notice the (not working) information displays. Personally, if the anouncements will be the same as the 175s I hope they never turn them on, the 175 anouncers are so anoying. I don't get a ride on 158s often enough to know whether the new interior layout is better than the old (though I understand they have squesed the seats lost to ERTMS back in and I should congratuatle SARPA that seats that line up with the windows seem plentiful), and I always try to avoid on-train toilets so I wouldn't know about that.

Basicly what I'm trying to say is, while the units have been refurbished to the extent that they seem many years younger than they are, I don't think many of the many new aspects I am able to comment on are actually an improvement over the previous design.

I'd have happier if:
  • The backs of the seat were slightly softer
  • The blue carpet on the walls was replaced rather than removed
  • The blue strips (that broke up the plain grey/white rather nicely) were replaced rather than removed and
  • They had used the dark blue of said strips instead of the horrid Arriva turquoise used on the armrests and elsewhere.

The windows are not designed to be opened. There are four hopper windows on each vehicle that can be opened in the event of the Air Conditioning Failing.

Saying that as well every time I've been on a 158 when the aircon has failed all the hopper windows open.

Well the air conditioning had failed, yet the guard only managed to open one window in the vehicle I was in, despite trying to open them all. Either all four of those hopper windows need to work or the air-con needs to work, so I hope the refurb has improved the chances of either the air-con or the windows working. This is esspecially important given that, judging from the disscusions on the fourms, air-con failure seems to be a common complaint for 158s.

Ok, I take it back. A train company whose HR Director refers to it's drivers as Mil Float Operators, is clearly excellent, wonderful and deserves the franchise permanently.

http://www.railnews.co.uk/news/general/2011/02/25-arriva-trains-wales-braces-for.html

and Santa Claus is real.

Peter Leppard - Operations and Safety Director
Peter is responsible for the day to day operational side of the company, including the safety function and performance management.

Lynne Milligan - Human Resources Director
As Human Resources Director, Lynne is responsible for employee relations, training and recruitment for the company.

To be fair,it was the Leppard in the land of leather who said it.Bet hes ripped up a few sofas since.

Have to say that I disagree with you in part with regard to the seats: it may only be of concern to lanky persons such as myself, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there's room for my legs on the refurbed units' airline-style seats - something of a shock after years of rushing for the table seats to avoid having to sit rather awkwardly and diagonally across the airline-style ones. And I can't be certain, but to me the backs of the new seats feel a little more upright than the old ones, which to me at least was more comfortable, although I appreciate that's a matter of personal preference.

Quite disappointed to hear nothing's been done about the air con, though, as I'm sure anyone who's spent a while parked at Talerddig in the middle of the August summer sun will agree.

I know what you mean, my main complaint about the TrawsCambria buses is that only 2 of them have sufficent legroom for me in many seats (there are 4 piority seats on 2 other vehicles that are alright too).

I wasn't in them that long, but I don't think there was quite enough leg room for me in the airline I sat in on the refurbished ATW 158. I don't know if it was just that row of seats or if it is an improvement on the previous layout. If it is an improvment then that's a plus. Perhaps I've just never actually sat in airline seats on a non-refurbed ATW 158. Sitting in airline on one of FGW's 158s from Cosham to Cardiff gave me sore legs, though their softer seats where otherwise more comfortable for me than the 175 I changed onto once I reached Cardiff (with it's rock-hard seats, but much better legroom).

Rhydgaled, any company is bound to want to put their own stamp on such a project. Why on earth would ATW want to leave a regional railways strip on the luggage rack and former operators dark blue internally? That's just a bit bizarre.

Also your comments that you didn't visit the loo or bike area shows sadly you didn't witness some key improvements.

I suspect your guard was inexperienced as the windows have two side catches. Unless you know what you are doing you can easily get confused and fasten one then release the other, as they are usually only left secured one side where air con has been playing up. I have known one in four be faulty but never 3!

Well, ATW would want to put their stamp on it, but when does their franchise end? WAG paid for it, or at least contributed, so if the refurb is expected to last beyond the current frachise they could have specified a more neutral appearance. Seeing as the BR logo is used as a neutral symbol as the national rail logo, Regional railways blue could be considered quite neutral. WAG seem to have reduced the degree Arriva have put their stamp on the external livery, while I think it is actually slightly turquoise (not BR blue as I have heard it discribed elsewhere) it is very different to (and much smarter than) Arriva's livery as applied to the rest of the ATW units. I just hope the ends, with their lighter turquoise Arriva swashes, can easily and cheaply be made the same colour as the rest of the unit when the franchise expires. ScotRail standardised the lot, and I haven't heard them considering taking over the running of the franchise wheras the WAG were looking at putting a not-for-profit company in charge when the franchise expires. What's been done has been done I suppose.

Well, after trying to open one of the windows, the guard did mutter "I hate these windows" so it sounded like this particular guard had had experience (and problems) with them before.

I'm not 100% but I think from what I read 143's are actually top of ATW PPM figures atm.
As far as I can see the biggest failure to be had with 158's is with the doors.
Personally I find the 158 refurb quite smart, and it's just unfortunate there wasn't an emphasis on reliability as well.
