Could the Deltics have been upgraded to 110mph operation?

There are many stories of drivers pushing the Deltics beyond their official top speed of 100mph, so why was it never considered to upgrade the top speed of these locomotives when they could commonly pass 100mph?

I think the "balancing" speed for a Deltic was actually 105 mph.

IIRC, there was no loco-hauled stock in use on the East Coast Main Line that was (officially) permitted to exceed 100 mph.

good point. That would probably have brought a whole succession of costs: more intensive maintainance, extra inspections and tighter tolerances...

IIRC, there was no loco-hauled stock in use on the East Coast Main Line that was (officially) permitted to exceed 100 mph.
Until the preparation for HSTs there would also have been no track where line speed was above 100 mph.

Furthermore, mechanical signalling on the ECML only ended in 1978, by which time the withdrawal of the Deltics was already imminent.
