GB Railfreight - Train Manager Operator

Hello all,

Can anyone shed any light on the Train Manager Operator role at GB Railfreight?

Reads like a driving job, but states that it would suit an experienced shunter.

Any insights gratefully received, as the advert is quite vague in detail.

Looks like a new position as I’ve never seen them advertise this before. On reading it I got the impression that it would be a Groundstaff role with some depot or local driving, but not full-on driving over routes, if that makes sense.

TMOs are essentially shunt drivers, but can drive mainline within a 20 mile radius of their home depot.

As far as I am aware, it is the same as an ordinary trainee driver course, however brake handling is 75 hours (I think) instead of the usual 200-odd hours.

As mentioned by others it's a shunting role where you'll be able to drive on the mainline within 20 miles of your Depot. Handling hours has been set to 150.

I’d imagine salary is a bit more than the rail operator role, but likely a lot less than driver/Train Manager

Strange advert (and usual quirky job title), states that it may be good for an experienced Shunter looking for a change of pace, but also asks for someone who has already passed their train driver psychometric tests!? Surely most people in that bracket will be looking for a full Driver position and likely in a process with a company as a trainee/apprentice driver? I realise some pass the tests and go no further, and this job may suit as a ‘leg up’ to full mainline eventually, but it’s still only gonna attract a select few I think with those criteria. If they were offering training, they’d be inundated with applications I reckon.

Reading it back to myself now, and I’m not actually sure what i meant?! lol.. I think I may have been referring to the Psychometric Tests rather than any training but I’m not sure. Either way, looks like an interesting position for a current Groundstaff or mobile Shunter wanting to add driving in to their role before possibly progressing
