CLC line Sunday diversions late 1950s

I have a clear memory of travelling from Liverpool Central one Sunday morning 1955 or later, and being diverted after Glazebrook via Baguley and Northenden, instead of going direct to Manchester Central.
Out of curiosity, which of the these possibilities would be the likely one after Northenden:
Direct to Manchester London Road (now Piccadilly) as current mid-Cheshire trains from Chester.
To Cheadle Heath, then reverse to reach Central.
To Heaton Mersey, then reverse to reach Central.

I would imagine that one of the Central options would be the best fit.

Can anybody recall similar diversions in that period?

Not sure if they did but after Northenden they could continue along the CLC route via Stockport Tiviot Dale then run via Woodley and Hyde North to Fairfield, from there joining the loop line to gain direct access to Manchester Central?

Anything involving a reversal is feasible, but would be avoided if possible. The easiest route might be Stockport Tiviot Dale, curve Brinnington Jn to Reddish Jn, then Ashburys to Manchester Piccadilly

Don’t want take things off topic, but when did Brinnington Jn - Reddish Jn actually close Bevan? Only last Sunday decided to walk along the old trackbed with my wife and couldn’t find a great deal of history on the former route?

3J29 03:25 MX Parcels Stockport Tiviot Dale to Manchester Victoria was booked over the line in the 9/9/63-14/6/64 timetable. Not much else I could find!

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I had not realised there would be such a dislike of reversals. Maybe this was related to needing ground staff for the attachment/detachment or running-round of locos.

You also needed facilities for turning the loco, otherwise you ended up running tender first, which was seldom an ideal situation. Also when a loco was detached/ attached, time was required to release, run-round, recouple, reconnect the heating and brake pipes and to conduct a brake test, etc. All of which makes for a slower journey.

Not so much an active dislike of reversals - rather taking the easiest avilable option.
Another option in your example - if they had really wanted only to go to Manchester Central, they could have reversed in Heaton Mersey Sidings, using a different loco from the local shed, rather than have one loco run round the train.
