The 133 has been "saved" - Central Connect are taking it on as the 333, but on a reduced frequency and operating hours. Locals aren't happy: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp9ykd03d11o.amp

So . . . perhaps Councillor Hooks would like to use part of her "discretionary" budget to financially support the evening and Sunday service . . . it probably wouldn't cost a huge amount, as the buses will be paid for on the daytime trips. Sometimes I wonder if local councillors have any inkling of "if you want something, then you have to pay for it".

At leats a chunk of the service will continue, and at no cost to the "public purse". Better than complete withdrawal . . .

Councillors are keenly aware of the facts, and are also aware of having to manage with budgets that shrink year on year. On the other hand, many taxpayers seem blissfully unaware of how tight those budgets are and still object to contributing to them.

It seems that the extended 31 is replacing routes 1 and 4, so that will create the demand.
It would be better to have a 1 or 4 shuttling those roads that aren't being serviced anymore, while having the 31 run around the rest of Farley Hill. Lots of elderly residents and other residents complaining on social media that it is difficult for them to walk to the nearest bus stops for the 31. Sounds like what they did with the 23, forcing residents to walk when most are elderly. At least they changed that though, so hopefully they give that bit a rethink. Otherwise, I am excited to see the 31 run, but I think it will be a repeat of when the 28/29 were extended there about 10 years ago - reverted after a while. However, I'm all for bigger buses and more capacity in Farley Hill.

Probably because Eagle is the one bit that hasn’t been called to Public Inquiry… yet…
They actually have recently, and I don't think it was a good outcome! I have no idea why they had an inquiry or why they are still operating with a negative outcome, though.

Sadly, GN04 UFV (6449) has been withdrawn (17/3/25). I'm surprised GN04 UFU (6448) has outlived it, but that will be going soon. I will definitely miss these two; I'm not a fan of the Olympuses.

And UFU got withdrawn this morning, barely made it out the depot before one final breakdown. 25 years of running ALX400's in Luton is now over, unless LX04 FYN decides to make an unlikely appearance!

Reading on the Arriva site that route X5 is being withdrawn due to 'low patronage' - I rode an X5 this morning from Aylesbury to Hemel Hempstead and counted 51 other passengers using that journey. Is that 'low patronage'?

Every time I have been on the X5 it has been busy too!

Looks as if they expect passengers to switch to the competing Red Eagle service which by passes Aston Clinton saving up to 15 minutes on the end to end journey.

Will Red Eagle maintain this routing or will the take the old route after May?

My main use of the X5 was going between Hemel Hempstead and Oxford*; I was wondering if I'd normally switch to going via Bletchley once East West Rail reopens depending on price, but I suspect that with those running hours it's going to be a much easier decision if going anywhere further west than Oxford itself.

*I don't recall seeing anybody else changing between the X5 and an Aylesbury – Oxford bus in either direction.

Red Eagle have uploaded their timetable of the new 500 route replacing the X5: https://redeagle.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/TT_500_0425.pdf

What a downgrade, running time and frequency reduced from half-hourly 5am to 11pm-ish, to hourly 6am to 8pm. Also, that one minute layover at Hemel sure isn’t going to cause problems(!)
I completely agree. I don't have high hopes for this route, but hopefully, Red Eagle will use the month between the 500 starting and the X5 withdrawal to resolve the issues. At least Red Eagle is committed to running a route; Hemel has been neglecting it since they got it!

I also haven't seen anything about this particular public inquiry (it's not been reported in the trade press yet), but it may be worth saying that revoking an operator licence is at the severe end of actions that a traffic commissioner can take - a 'negative outcome' could be a warning, an instruction to comply with certain instructions / undertakings within a set timescale, or a temporary / permanent reduction in authorised vehicles. Immediate revocation of operator licences is relatively rare.

In the same way that magistrates / judges have a range of sentencing options for a guilty verdict in a criminal trial.

I have heard that all Red Eagle and Red Rose got for their public inquiries were fines.

I have also seen that Luton are getting 30 brand new Evoras for busway operation, with 10 being in the UK at the minute getting painted, and we are also due YJ08 EER/S/V from Telford, bringing practically the whole family of Olympuses to Luton. Still no idea what has happened to EEB though, hasn't been since it was in MK and hasn't been spotted in Luton at all. Wish we could have some E400s added into the mix though.

Arriva have apparently lost the Leighton’s Buses contract and the new operator will be Red Rose starting from May onwards. How some of those drivers must feel after being placed there due to the closure of Aylesbury and High Wycombe to have to move not even a year later is beyond me.

Red Rose have become a thorn in Arriva’s side that they failed to remove.

Edit: It is apparently Centrebus that have won the contract.

I assume the baby MMCs might move elsewhere as a result?

Perhaps Gillingham could have them back!

Those vehicles were new two-ish years ago, and Gillingham made a fair bit of song and dance about finally having some shiny new buses for the 145 and 164 routes in the Medway Towns. (Two routes which have some tight turns and some narrow roads, and where full length buses are awkward.)

I think they lasted three weeks in the Medway Towns before being reallocated to Leighton Buzzard, and the explanation at the time was that Arriva hadn't really been expecting to win the Central Bedfordshire business, but that it was always planned that those buses would go there if they did.

That would be great if they did. Can finally see off the older E200s and Northfleet could potentially have some as well to replace their older buses as well. They would also do well on the 100 as well.

But, probably moving somewhere like Merseyside that makes more money!

Which drivers were “placed” in Leighton Buzzard?

Oh yes, that’s right: none of them.

You’re probably of the same camp of our local correspondent who cannot take any sort of criticism for what is a bad job riddled with changes and inconsistencies. If the people in power paid a little more attention to things that matter and not trying to nitpick and be annoyingly pedantic; Carousel and the Red Group would not have excelled where Arriva couldn’t.

I guess no one moved from Aylesbury to Leighton then?

Press release quoted below. Sounds very much like Arriva wanted to retain the Leighton's buses contract.

Leighton’s buses changes operator on some routes

from 1 June 2025

Arriva is sad to announce that we will no longer be operating the Leighton's buses network of town services from Sunday 1 June.

Having mobilised the new network in May 2023, we have been proud to work alongside Central Bedfordshire Council and other stakeholders to significantly boost customer numbers and keeping communities connected within Leighton Buzzard as the town continues to grow.

This means that from 1 June, we will no longer be operating routes L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, and L6. These routes will now be served by another bus operator. For more information on routes and times, please visit Central Bedfordshire Council’s website here.

We’ll be proud to continue serving Leighton Buzzard with our inter-urban bus services from this date. We’ll be releasing more details about how these routes and times will change very soon, so keep an eye on our socials and our website for more information in the coming weeks.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the people of Leighton Buzzard for their support throughout our involvement with the Leighton's buses network. We also wish Central Bedfordshire Council and the new operator the very best in continuing the good work of providing vital local bus services.

I think there's a difference between nitpicking and calling out statements which are clearly untrue.

No operator should be impervious to criticism where that criticism is constructive and deserved, but rather than being riddled with changes and inconsistencies Arriva's operation of the Leighton Buzzard network has generally been pretty good.

Related to Arriva: Red Rose will launch a direct service to Leighton Buzzard from Aylesbury in June. That will more than likely kill off the X4 which takes the most stupid route between the two towns. 55 minutes it can take compared to a previous run of 30.

Disappointing that they don’t name the new operator - it always comes across a bit churlish. We’ve lost, someone else has won but you have to ask the council who!
They are fairly hot off the mark in telling you they have lost the contract, the registrations for 1st June don't go off until next week so they may not be in a position to do so yet (if the council have told them officially yet - stand still positions and sorting paperwork). Normally this sort of thing wouldn't be public for a couple of weeks yet even with the most communicative operators.
