Also, from December there will be more Class 170s on the Liverpool to Norwich route, there are a number of 3 car services. Including 1R62 and 1R64 from Norwich.
I suppose if the connection is missed and you end up an hour late then potentially some significant delay repay is possible…!As discussed previously, the Grantham connections improve to hourly for York/Newcastle from December, but it's true it is and will be a bit tight. The connecting service from Nottingham often seems to arrive at least a few minutes late which makes it a little bit stressful. FWIW I had a look at the data for a recent month (Mon-Fri) and the connection worked 17 times out of 20. Once it was missed by about a minute, and twice by a mile due to the incoming service from Sheffield being very late. At least when that happens you can potentially switch to the Newark option below if your ticket allows.
The via Newark option works very well at times, particularly if you're going further north. It's a perfectly fine 12 minute trot across Newark if you're mobile and travelling light, and with 2tph from Nottingham to Newark fairly well spaced you can potentially chose between allowing a generous or just adequate connection time.
Hello. On a more general point, as an occasional but reasonably regular user of the Norwich to Peterborough leg of the Norwich to Liverpool service, I must say it is a very underwhelming experience. A 2 car DMU is provided for what is a long distance, InterCity, East/West, Coast to Coast service. It is usually very crowded with no room for luggage. It really does encourage people to use their cars. I have written several times to EMR highlighting these shortcomings, but had no constructive response.
The last time I used it, the train crew kept us waiting on the freezing cold platform at Norwich until just 7 mins before the scheduled departure time. Keeping warm in the waiting room was not an option, as the demand for the service was such that it would have meant standing all the way to Peterborough!
Was something cancelled earlier in the day, as they often stick cancelled trains on the back of running onesQuick query from me! https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:W21756/2025-03-16/detailed#allox_id=0 shows 1R76 Norwich to Nottingham as a 6 car set
There's been a few others today too in either direction also showing as 6 cars.
Is this just because RTT (Realtimetrains.co.uk) has been fed/is displaying 2 sets of information, or are these trains actually running as 6 cars (and if so, do they fit!?).
It would be dreamy to have this many seats as these trains are usually overcrowded at weekends, at least Norwich-Peterborough (and often further!), but I didn't think there were enough trains for it, nor space at Ely in 3B (though I see this one used platform 1).
Certain services (stock permitting) are also strengthened on Saturdays if Peterborough or Norwich are playing at home.EMR often strengthen a few of the Nottingham-Norwich services at weekends (resources permitting) when either...

The 0651 Norwich->Liverpool service ran throughout as four coaches yesterday (Friday 4th April), not sure why that was. I was scratching my head at Nottingham wondering where the extra two coaches - that normally join there - were!EMR often strengthen a few of the Nottingham-Norwich services at weekends (resources permitting) when either...

No driver for the first one.The 0651 Norwich->Liverpool service ran throughout as four coaches yesterday (Friday 4th April), not sure why that was. I was scratching my head at Nottingham wondering where the extra two coaches - that normally join there - were!
Lots of people boarded at Nottingham, but virtually everyone piled onto the front two coaches, the rear one was nearly empty.![]()
GA also running half-hourly on the Norwich-Cambridge route in the busiest hours today too. Keeping the EN panel signaller busy in the power box.No driver for the first one.
Usual strengthening today with a variety of 4 and 5 car sets heading East. Doubling up for covering lack of direct trains to London Liverpool Street and St Pancras. Rather busy they are too!
