Is that 017?

I remember that was in a siding near the shunters cabin for years at Ilford Car Sheds in the early 1980's.Any pics?:p

Not one of mine, tis one of Carl Watsons excellent images!

I did however head down to Basingstoke on tuesday to catch it coming through...though annoyingly it came through on 3! Ah Well...
Wow, it looks in really good external condition, much better than I was expecting. :) Ahh, brings back happy memories of seeing at at Ilford Depot or riding on it as a little'un on the Southminster branch. :)

That's great to hear. I hope the C&WC look after her properly.

I was given to understand that she went initially to covered storage at MoD Kineton, so I don't know at what point she ended up at Eastleigh. However, she was always kept under cover at Ilford and was in very good external condition when I last saw her in the Car Sheds, so it's no surprise that she's still in good nick now.

I'm given to understand that she lacks both TPWS and OTMR, but that what knocked her out of operational status was a problem with the HT lead between the pan and the transformer. An Ilford fitter told me that they'd put the pan up in the Car Sheds and she made a godawful noise on the juice, so they dropped the pan again sharpish. Investigations showed that the HT lead had almost completely parted company and was just holding on by a few strands. A replacement was ordered up but was found the be almost two feet too short, so that was that. Soon after that she had to give up her spot in the Car Sheds to make space for operational units and she was gone.

Ah, that makes sense. Said HT lead is still with the vehicle. It'll be possible to get a new HT lead made, at a cost, will be into 5 figures. Though a chat with Mekufa may result in a better price given the circumstances.

As for TPWS and OTMR that's no biggie given some time. Cost won't be horrendous.

GSM-R however will be a problem.

it seemed to be going fast,on its last days as special workings i thought it was limited to 45 or was it 60..i guess that was cos of the electrics but i thought it was dodgey bogies
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
on the subject of the HT lead is this more than a bit of thick wire with connectors on the ends
it so i would have thought it would cost a couple of hundred rather than thousands

could they confisgate a bit from the cable theives when they catch them

Insulated HT cables are special business. Whilst the conductor is relatively small, say 75mm sq, the insulation around it is massive thus the cable ends up being the best part of 100mm wide. The terminations at either end also have to be handled specially to avoid tracking down the cable. These are either through oil filled bushings or a special arrangement which I'm not entirely clear on as I haven't had one apart!
