Why is that?Scotland doesn't have penalty fares, so no.
Is anyone aware if the Greater Anglia PERTIS’s and the one at Didcot Parkway are still in situ? AFAIK Wrabness has been removed.
A mix of historical and legal reasons. Why is that?
Interesting, so it’s only the former NSE area that has them?A mix of historical and legal reasons.
Penality fares were initially introduced by BR in parts of the NSE area where stations were too close together for the guard to always get through selling tickets, as opposed to rural areas which were operating on the paytrain basis to keep station operating costs down. With Scotland being mostly rural with unstaffed stations the latter situation applies to the majortiy of services there. As for why PERTIS existed, TVMs wouldn't be invented for another year (and even then early ones could only sell a limited range of tickets), something was needed for stations with part-time ticket offices.
On the legal side the penalty fare regulations exclude Scotland-only services and the Scotrail franchise, as they are a devolved matter and the Scottish govenment hasn't make any of their own.
Thanks for letting me know. They really cleared them out quickly!
I read somewhere that Sutton Common / West Sutton might still have them.
West Sutton's is gone I think. I must admit I didn't know it had one in the first place, but I can't see one anywhere and there's a suspiciously newer section of tarmac to the right of the main ticket machine.Haydons Road, Loughborough Junction, Morden South, Saint Helier, South Merton, Sutton Common, Tooting, West Sutton, Wimbledon Chase, all had one PERTIS machine each when i visited last year. They were all broken. So these machines might still exist.
West Midlands and West Yorkshire also had them, everywhere else only got penalty fares after the rollout of modern TVMs (or in the case of Merseyrail have fully staffed stations).Interesting, so it’s only the former NSE area that has them?
It's almost as if some senior bods whose job it is to ensure removal of redundant / outdated equipment are reading this thread having not previously realised the machines were still in situ...I’ve just passed through Cooksbridge and there’s no sign of the Permit Machine. Another one that’s been removed!
Sutton Commons machine has also gone.
Nothing would surprise with the railway system! It's almost as if some senior bods whose job it is to ensure removal of redundant / outdated equipment are reading this thread having not previously realised the machines were still in situ...
One more to tick off the disappearing list!!West Sutton's is gone I think. I must admit I didn't know it had one in the first place, but I can't see one anywhere and there's a suspiciously newer section of tarmac to the right of the main ticket machine.
So there was more: https://pert.is/Map - but they are seemingly all goneGreat little video
Are there believed to be more in Essex that don’t work? If yes what are the locations?
You can see on street view Kirby Cross one has been removed, same at Walton on The Naze by using the older imagesSo there was more: https://pert.is/Map - but they are seemingly all gone
(Glad you liked the video, part two coming soon)
Looking forward to seeing part 2!So there was more: https://pert.is/Map - but they are seemingly all gone

Updated! Down to 14 PERTIS Machines remaining (likely less) - incredibly down to (at most) 6 in GTR land. If Loughborough Junction can be confirmed, it remains as the only one in the entirety of Greater London.Great! Thanks.
Faygate, Fishersgate, Wimbledon Chase, South Merton, Morton South, North Dulwich and Plumpton have all gone in the past couple of weeks.
Is the machine at Warnham definitely gone? I would have presumed it is still there if Holmwood is as they would probably remove them together. But you never know. Has anyone checked there recently?I have updated the map with the reports from this thread! By my count we are down to 21 machines across the entire country. Since almost all but SWR's work, I have updated the map to sort by TOC. Any errors please let me know!

PERTIS Machine Locations – Google My Maps
Accurate as of 12 March 2026. Any updates please let me know here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/locations-of-permit-to-travel-machines.220921/www.google.com
Oops, may have been too happy with the delete key, I'll re-add it since it isn't confirmed. Holmwood was said to remain in situ a couple of weeks ago.Is the machine at Warnham definitely gone? Well done on the Essex video! I have images of the ones I confirmed back in July 2023 on my phone (and Wrabness was one of them). If you require, I can make a google drive of them all.(Glad you liked the video, part two coming soon)
Warnham's Permit to Travel was definitely removed a few years ago. A dot matrix display was installed roughly in it's place at the same time (which was probably the reason for it's removal). Is the machine at Warnham definitely gone? I would have presumed it is still there if Holmwood is as they would probably remove them together. But you never know. Has anyone checked there recently?
Map has been updated accordingly! Loughborough Junction and Didcot Parkway would need to have their PERTIS machines in situ confirmed. We are now down to 13 PERTIS machines (with only 8 having been 100% confirmed in situ). Thanks for the updates on the other machines, I had concluded the Sutton Loop line machines had been removed from YouTube videos last night and I suspected the other ones had been removed as well!
Ashwell & Morden, Foxton, Meldreth, Watton At Stone, still had theirs when i visited just over a year ago. So they might still exist. But i would not be surprised if they are gone now. Shepreth had definitely been removed when i visited.Map has been updated accordingly! Loughborough Junction and Didcot Parkway would need to have their PERTIS machines in situ confirmed. EDIT: Forgot about the Great Northern ones. Foxton and Watton would also need to be confirmed.
I checked out Cheam myself in 2023 and it was removed (indicated by new tarmac where it should beDoes anyone know if the machine at Cheam still exists? The machine at Cheam is hidden down the side entrance on P2 used when the ticket office is closed so could easily be missed?
Fingers crossed!Might have a scout around myself on the Cambridge line over the weekend. Will also check Watton At Stone

North Dulwich might still exist. I am not sure if anyone has checked that one. It is right outside the station entrance. But if that is gone then yes i imagine there may well be no PERTIS machines left in London any more.Fingers crossed!

I can confirm that Loughborough Jc machine has gone. I’d assume that London doesn’t have any left now?

Ah thank you for confirming. That is a shame. They are removing them very rapidly. Especially in the past couple months it seems like they have sped up the removal process.Yes I’m afraid north Dulwich has gone!
