Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

None of the 805 or 807 went abroad or for climate testing.
805001 had no interior fitted when testing, I think (happy to be corrected) that 002 upwards were all fully fitted out when left factory.

It is usually the first one or two in any type that get way-laid for a lot of testing. Type testing is a phrase that seems to be used.
Given these (805s and 807s) are not really much (?) different from 800s and 801s I would expect type testing to be less important or less involved.
There is always the testing that Avanti would have wanted for their specific route and usage - how much ?.
But for for a version quite different (the 810s) I would expect it to all need type testing again, certainly more than these 805s and 807s.

Provisionally 805002 is scheduled to move from Hitachi Merchant Park to Wembley on 26th March.
This will then officially complete delivery of the 13 x 5 car bimode units for Avanti.

I haven’t been on 805s that much but they definitely have a better ride quality at speed and a nicer ambience compared to the 221s they replaced.

The other day at work I noticed an 805 waiting at the signal before entering Crewe and it dropped it's pantograph to go onto diesel mode. Is this a normal occurrence because it was the first time I noticed/spotted it?

There was a speed restriction on the set in AC mode due to pantograph issue on the leading vehicle of 805010. There was no such restriction in diesel mode.... thus I believe just 4 minutes was lost & the driver got to refresh mainline operations in diesel mode.

They should be able to make 110mph alright, the gensets produce the same 'restricted' power in diesel mode as LNER's Azumas, about ~750bhp.

I believe they just have a sticker in the cab that reads 'No TASS fitted, 110mph' or something similar.

As evident by the 10 car run from EUS.... yes. Even with one gen set out on one of the units. Takes a while to get going, but they do get there.

No. The TMS is hard wired for 125 mph max. Its up to the driver to set the TMS speed limiter to the required lower value as appropriate.

Correct.
For a 10 car 805 the Pans at either end must be in use for speeds up to 125.
A 100 restriction is if both front of both rear are in use and if the two pans next to each other (rear on front unit, front on rear unit) its 80mph.

I think on diesel the 805 tops out somewhere around 116mph…

Not sure what the exact fault was, but it could not be used.

Might be an idea to have it default to 110 mph when logging in since it can’t be turned off.

Such alterations to the TMS software require funding & development. Which isnt available. Its still a pipe dream, but speeds higher than 110 will be needed if the MU speed profiles are ever introduced. Which would in theory make any amendment to speed set now be temporary & therefore definitely not worth the expense.
