I think they tend work east and west sides more than across, so to get them all you'll probably need more than one place. There may be some good intermediate spots I don't know, but there are certainly lots in and out of Piccadilly on the average day, and there always seem to be some at Leeds and York when I've been there. Hopefully someone will have better info

Carlisle can be good, also see the Scotrail ones there.

Carlisle - services to Cumbrian Coast & Newcastle lines.
Manchester, Oxford Road (CLC line locals to Liverpool)
Manchester Victoria & Piccadilly.

Newcastle is also a good place to see them
You will not find many at Leeds or York

Middlesborough for the ones heading from Whitby/Nunthorpe/Saltburn to Bishops Auckland/Darlington/Newcastle/Hexham

Have a look on Realtime Trains for a previous day and see what you can find.

Avoid Yorkshire, apart from Middlesbrough to Whitby and Saltburn (leaving aside whether Boro or Saltburn are considered Yorkshire ). They may occasionally get to Sheffield via Hope Valley, but I'm not sure that happens much if at all. The days of them being regular traction on Huddersfield to Manchester stoppers are obviously long-gone. I've a feeling my last ride on one east of Huddersfield was way back in Northern Spirit days on the Settle-Carlisle.

Preston would be a good one to add the NW tour. Plenty there still. Salford Crescent and Manchester Piccadilly.

The Newton Heath ones are booked out of Manchester on Buxton, Rose Hill, Liverpool via Trafford Park, Clitheroe, Headbolt Lane, Southport and Blackburn services, and the odd Sheffield via Hope service. They also work Preston Ormskirk, Preston Colne and Preston Blackpool South.

The Heaton ones are booked out of Newcastle on Carlisle, Morpeth, Hexham, Middlesborough and Whitby services, and also do Bishops Auckland Darlington Saltburn, and Carlisle Barrow Lancaster/Lancaster Morecambe.

You will not see 156s at York or Leeds.

A few years ago they were turning up at Leeds on the occasional turn via the Calder Valley, but not now.

Okay, that's brilliant, was deciding where to go on Monday-Carlisle was my first choice (live in Herefordshire so I'm catching the 05:55 to Manchester regardless) but maybe change and fo a few hours in Manchester and Preston.

Don't know whether you still do (it's been years) but you used to get some Scotrail ones at Carlisle, running to Dumfries

The ScotRail services to Dumfries and Glasgow are still exclusively 156s.

If you travel through Lancaster, keep your eyes peeled. There is nearly always one in one of the bay platforms at the Northern end of the station.
