Hi all,
I picked up a penalty today for having the wrong ticket when travelling from Liverpool Lime st to Birmingham New st. I bought this ticket on Wednesday on Trainline and by mistake I booked the 13:33 Journey for the 28th of March and not the 14th. These are both Fridays and I got on the same scheduled journey, just two weeks before.
I was hoping I’d just have to pay the full fare price for a new ticket but I was given a penalty. I’ve appealed this penalty and I’m wondering what my chances are for this honest mistake? Is there a way for me to just pay the fare price for the journey I intended to get? I understand it’s a silly mistake and I should have been more careful, but it would be nice to know if I’ve got any chance to have my penalty decreased to just the fare price.
Thanks!

I think you've answered your own question, as noted in the bold bit. Unfortunately you did not have a valid ticket for the journey you made today. It is your responsibility to check what you have purchased. If you had noticed the error before boarding the train, then you could have rectified it by purchasing a new ticket straight away.

That being said, please upload a copy of any paperwork with suitable redaction of personal details just in case there is a technical reason that means the PF in invalid.

Hi thanks for your reply,
I’ve attached the PF slip, it doesn’t look like there’s anything technically wrong to me but you may find something I don’t see. This brings me to my next question - if I pay the amount now and somehow my appeal is accepted will I be refunded the right amount?

Penalty Fare of £50 + £37.90 is probably the best you can do, no criminal record, put down to experience.
You can appeal, but on what basis?
If your appeal is successful then, yes, you will be refunded.
But you didn’t have a valid ticket for your journey.

Okay, thanks for your help. Looks like I’ll just be £87.90 lighter and more careful next time.

It is possible that the original ticket that you did have can not now be used on the 28th, if you were to travel on that day. It probably can’t be refunded either if it has been checked.

Others can better advise you on these two points if they are relevant.

If you want this checking please upload a picture of the rest of the notice - all of it (but covering up any personal details/reference numbers etc.) as there are often errors in the boilerplate text that can provide valid grounds for appeal.

Secondly, this was the 13:33 train, issued at 13:46 when you must not yet have reached Runcorn?

Did you specifically ask the inspector to issue the Penalty for your entire journey to Birmingham, because if not, the Penalty Fare could only be issued to the next station, presumably Runcorn, with you getting a new ticket from there to your destination. If you were not given this option then that's another ground for appeal.

I’ll repost the full receipt when I next have it in hand, the inspector only asked me where I was travelling to, I asked about purchasing a valid ticket but she said I’m gonna receive a penalty, nothing else.
