Fare advice for Crewe - Settle - Carlisle

Hi all,

I'm wanting to travel from Crewe to Settle tomorrow, do some walking, then carry on up the S&C to Carlisle. Then travel back to Crewe from Carlisle. What is the best value ticket to do this?

I was thinking of a single Crewe to Settle, then Settle to Carlisle, then Carlisle back to Crewe - but I was wondering if there's a better value ticket. I was optimistically hoping the Crewe to Carlisle return would be valid via Settle but I don't think it is.

I have a staff travel card so will get 75% off.

If that's the case, then the best way is to split off-peak day returns at Wigan. You'll save £1.10 over getting an off-peak return from Wigan to Carlisle and £2.85 over a straight-up off-peak return.

or the priv Round robin at 12.85 and a priv day return to Preston for £8.95 - if the map at https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/sites/default/files/2022-10/North West Round Robin map NEW.pdf is correct. £22 for a day out... I might date a box!

Oh the £2.85 I quoted is taking into account the priv rates. It would be CDR Crewe–Wigan, CDR Wigan–Preston, North West Round Robin

Ah I think this will be the winner then! I couldn’t see that it was valid but will trust your expert advice!

Rover advice is also great - will keep that in mind for next time.

Well was a great day out but I did get a bit of hassle from the northern guard between Lancaster and Giggleswick who took a great deal of convincing that the ticket was valid that way round.
