Hi folks. I'm doing a bit of travelling in October of this year part of which involves New York. Do any of you good people know if the loco hauled services from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie operate as loco hauled 7 days a week? I might be aiming for the Sunday. Apologies if this is a daft question.

Hi folks. I'm doing a bit of travelling in October of this year part of which involves New York. Do any of you good people know if the loco hauled services from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie are loco hauled 7 days a week? I might be aiming for the Sunday. Apologies if this is a daft question.

They are hauled every day. Currently it’s the excellent GE P32AC-DM locos that operate the service, but new Siemens locos are sadly being delivered to take over.

Sit on the left hand side of the train out of Grand Central for views over the Hudson River - you will hopefully have some spectacular autumn colours if going in October. I would also recommend stopping off at the coffee shops in the station buildings at Tarrytown and Peekskill.

Since the third rail only reaches Croton-Harmon, all trains to Poughkeepsie are loco-hauled.

It can be the opposite of what you asked about - I have seen some of the Grand Central to Croton-Harmon “stoppers” operated with the GE locos at weekends in the past.

Whatever you do, hope you enjoy it - it is one of my absolutely favourite railway journeys.

That's amazing, thanks so much for your advice. Massively appreciated. I'll be looking at jumping off at Tarrytown I think, I will certainly check out the coffee shop.

Beacon is a lovely town and worth visiting if you have time. DIA:Beacon good if you like modern art.
