Is it possible to buy a paper one day travelcard with senior railcard discount in advance from a national rail station outside London.
Reason is I have a paper ticket to East Croydon and would prefer not to have to get off and exit barriers and come back through with contactless/oyster

Yes, it is. Any staffed ticket office will be able to sell one and most TVMs should be able to do it via the "tickets from another station" function.

Am I right in saying that off-peak tickets can't be bought from TVMs until the off-peak window commences? Senior Railcards are I think invalid until off-peak??

From memory, you can use the Change Date/Time option, to advance the time of travel to the time that off peak tickets become available.

If using the buy from another station option, it usually comes with the ability to change the date and time.

It's not as simple as that. And when it can be valid for travel doesn't affect when it can be used to make a purchase.

Yes, you can buy it online and pick it up at any ticket machine that supports Ticket on Departure (ToD) collection. You could also go to a ticket office, and many (though not all) ticket machines support buying tickets for travel from other stations.

A Senior Railcard discounted Off-Peak Day Travelcard for Zones 1-6 costs £11.00 as of last Sunday's fare increase. Of course, depending on where you're travelling from and when, it may be cheaper to refund the ticket you already have and to buy a new ticket that includes the Travelcard element (called an 'outboundary' Travelcard). These are usually priced quite competitively, often costing just a few pounds more than the equivalent ticket to London Terminals.

Sorry to jump in on this, but how exactly do you buy a travelcard online? What do you put in the journey planner? Happy to use the railforums ticketing site!

Depends on what you want

If you want a straight Travelcard, select whatever 2 stations in the zones and select the TravelCard option

For an outboundary (so a inbound ticket that is also a Travelcard), you select your normal journey and it will be an option

Any retailer will sell you a travlecard as an option

The easiest interfaces I found to do it are the beta forum ticketing website https://tickets-beta.railforums.co.uk, and the southeastern website.

Technically a Travelcard can only be sold a maximum of 7-days ahead of travel. I was once refused sale of one several weeks ahead at Stevenage and checks with a knowledgable member on here confirmed that this is the position.

In reality they can be purchased months ahead online and collected from a ticket machine, and I suspect 99.9% of ticket offices would not know about the 7-day rule anyway.

I sense a "boarding a train with a ticket purchased more than 7 days earlier" prosecution incoming!

Depends where your arriving from at East Croydon but if your train has a On board supervisor or Conductor they will quite happily sell the travelcard to you in my experience.

As a general rule, to buy a zones 1-6 Day Travelcard search for a return journey from a zone 6 (or zone 5) station to the London terminal - a Travelcard should be one of the tickets offered (but do double check that's the ticket you select).

(Whilst a Travelcard is valid regardless of the purported origin station printed on it, I might suggest choosing an 'appropriate' origin for the area where you will start using the Travelcard to avoid any potential furrowed brows of ticket inspectors.)

Some example journey searches...

Surbiton (zone 6) to Waterloo
East Croydon (zone 5) to London Bridge
Orpington (zone 6) to London Bridge
Bromley South (zone 5) to Victoria
Upminster (zone 6) to Fenchurch Street
Romford (zone 6) to Liverpool Street
Enfield Lock (zone 6) to Liverpool Street
Crews Hill or Hadley Wood (both zone 6) to Kings Cross or Moorgate
Elsree & Borehamwood (zone 6) to St Pancras
Harrow & Wealdstone (zone 5) to Euston
Harrow on the Hill (zone 5) to Marylebone
West Ruislip (zone 6) to Marylebone
West Drayton (zone 6) to Paddington
Heathrow Rail (zone 6) to Paddington

As @signed states above, some ticketing websites also offer other (simpler) ways to buy one - plus it's worth noting that whilst the Southeastern site is mentioned, the same interface/system is also used on the Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern sites too.

The forum's ticketing site will allow you to search from any location to "London Travelcard Zones 1-6" and be sold a Travelcard.

It may only be me who does this, but on sites that don't allow Travelcard Z1-6 to be entered as a destination, then for an inboundary Travelcard my habit is to select a station pair where I know the point-to-point fares are more expensive than the Travelcard, because then the Travelcard will be offered by default.

Crayford to Hadley Wood, for instance - even a single is way more expensive than an off-peak day Travelcard (which is insane when you think about it, but it is what it is).

It isn't that daft when you consider that discounts may apply and you have to have a full fare to have discounted fares.
