Just been using the "single fare finder" for the above journey (off peak) and it's come up with £2.80 (adult, no railcards); intending to tube to Tottenham Ct Rd and Eliz Line to Stratford rail - all contactless. Is that fare correct as it seems remarkably cheap?! Thanks!

Stratford was moved to the Zone 2 / Zone 3 boundary some years ago.

£2.80 is just the Zone 1 to Zone 2 TfL only off peak fare. The zonal nature of fares means that Euston to Belsize Park and Euston to Stratford costs the same even though one is a few miles and the other is nearly eight miles.

Yes, that's correct. Euston is in Zone 1, Stratford is in both Zones 2 & 3, and you are assumed to use services charged at Tube rate (e.g. the Underground and Elizabeth line "core") throughout. Therefore you are charged a Zone 1-2 Tube-rate fare, which costs £2.80 off-peak. Some of the TfL fares are remarkably good value!

Bear in mind that you can get a 1/3 discount for off-peak London travel (both on single rail fares as well as the daily cap) if you buy an Oyster card, costing £7, and have your Senior Railcard added to it by the staff at a Tube station.

I must get around to doing that some day, but generally I do short trips on the bus with my bus pass for free!

Indeed. "Long distance" journeys within London can be very good value due to this.

A journey from Croydon to Victoria/London Bridge is the same price as a journey to New Barnet, as the difference in zones is the same. Of course, the former is a popular journey, whereas very few people do the latter.

Indeed - journeys crossing Zone 1 are particularly good value when calculated on a "pence per mile" basis. Of course, given that this often means taking a triangular or otherwise indirect route, it's not quite as generous as it may seem at first glance.

Just out of interest, on Trainline I inputted Euston via Tottenham Ct Rd (Eliz line) to Stratford and got a fare of £6.70 (no railcard) but reading the above, if you tap in and out the journey should be no more than £2.80. Why doesn't Trainline offer the cheapest price? Seems a bit of a swizz? Is this the same for all ticketing sites?

Oddly it sends me to Paddington to connect with the Lizline, instead of the Northern Line to Tott. Ct Rd. That's bizarre!!

The £2.80 fare is for contactless / oyster only. Ordinary tickets purchased at the machines or by app are £6.70

Does that apply in any other part of the UK - that the way you pay affects the fare you pay?

Don’t think so, but cannot be certain. These fares are set by TfL and they introduced this differential many years ago, to encourage people to move to Oyster / contactless. As contactless is extended in the south east there may be other examples of a differential.

For the areas covered by the contactless extension (Project Oval), traditional ticket prices and PAYG prices are set equally.

Yes, I'm based in Bristol and Cardiff, and both areas have cheaper fares for pay as you go than for paper tickets or e-tickets.

I've certainly been educated tonight! I'll be more alert to this when visiting a new city, although if tap in/out's available I would use that regardless.

However with a Railcard and free bus pass (England) it still might be more economical to buy a paper ticket so more homework to do when out on my travels!

Indeed - as I recall, the Oyster fare is not valid on Southeastern highspeed.

Yes, £7.10 peak / £4.90 off-peak single from St Pancras International to Stratford International on Oyster / Contactless Southeastern High-speed until Saturday, then £7.40 / £5.10.

Not included in capping. No through fares to other routes.

How long does the Eliz line take from Tott. Ct. Rd. to Stratford, 20 Mins or so? Looks quite a way on the tube map, but doesn't have that many stations to call at though.

About 15 minutes provided the service hasn't been decimated by infrastructure issues that day.

The daily caps are quite good for value packed whizzing around London. Use Oyster with a Railcard loaded and I believe the caps have 1/3 taken off too.
